Help - I am a car audio newbie with a modest goal. Just got a new 04 Impalawith factory cassette radio - just want to upgrade to CD radio. Stopping by Circuit City to look at a Sony unit - sounds like a $100 deck will cost $100 more despite "free" install because of a $60 module for chimes? Wonder what replacement chimes sound like. Wonder if I should buy GM deck on net or Ebay so I can just swap? Wonder how I will know for sure if purchased GM unit fits? Can I get the dash apart? Can I unlock new radio? Would appreciate anybody's thoughts on any of these questions!!!! Mark Replies (2) UKinstaller on 11/20/2004 03:55:24 the installation is free, the parts are not. installation costs $52 bucks normally. many new GM's are making aftermarket radio installation as difficulat as possible. you have to keep the chime system because whenever your car has errors, such as low oil or battery or whatever, the chimes will go off. i wouldn't get another GM radio. aftermarket will be much better. you get superior sound quality and features compared to factory, and it will probably be cheaper because factory radios are usually very expensive. and as far as the dash goes, an 04 impala is a nightmare. the entire dash has to come out. also, you will more than likely have to relocate your factory radio to your trunk because of RDS on the radio, along with adding the door chime. if you don't have much experience, i would definitely let a professional do the work. however, if you do have some experience, then you can probably do it. -UK ttocs on 11/20/2004 11:47:11 if I remember correctly there is a bit of work to get the impala dash off as well.....
