what to do with my typex?

hello, i'm new here

so anyways i have one of them Kenwood flip down decks.. MRD-M1001amp and alpine typeX12. square box with a vent on the front, not exactly sure of the size.

I'm driving an eagle premire, i have a 96 amp alternator, and a 1100cca cat battery in the back, Power wire from under hood, coming to + on the cat battery, then + from cat going to the amp. negative to ground obviously. I do not think that i am getting the max out of my equipment, and I want to do so, at any means necessary.. I want it to hammer as hard as it can without cooking it. I find myself lost looking at the amplifier settings, because I'm not comfortable with how everything works in the car audio world. Gain settings ? whats the best for what i'm after?

PS i took a plasmacutter and chopped away the piece between the top of the back seats and the bottom of the rear windshield, so i have a large open space looking into the trunk.. (if anyone was gonna ask about airspace trunk space or anything..)

1rst things 1rst, is the pwr wire fused at the battery?

Eaglehaslanded on 11/16/2004 09:09:17
yea 100 amp breaker at the battery under the hood

Eaglehaslanded on 11/16/2004 09:10:04
it was installed by a "professional", but the only reason that the gain settings are all off is because of many times of unplugging thebattery, ect, adding the cat battery, plus now the subs all broken in and such so he i'm sure that they need to be set differently than he had them anyways ?

That's a pretty strong amp. It is rated at 1000 watts RMS @ 2 ohms. Your sub is a good match for this amp as well. You need #4 power and ground here and an inline fuse (near the BAT) of at least 80A.

If it's not rattling your mirrors and brains out, the problem is most likely in the way the amp is calibrated to your HU RCA inputs. Or, the sub enclosure is not well matched to this sub.

Not sure what model Kenwood HU you have, but it could be the RCA outs are between 2-4 volts. Your amp gain settings need to match the HU output voltage for full performance.

Do you have the install setup manual for that amp? If not, here are the details in .pdf format. Print out a copy for your files and reference.

http://www.alpine-usa.com/

You enter the Tech center, click on consumer site button and input model number of amp, sub to the search box. Hummm, no data in that model number (MRD-M1001) off web site.

It is a bit more complex to set up and without the install manual, is hard to wing it. This is a true Digital class Amplifier and it does require careful reading of the setup manual to get it right, Do you have a copy of that manual? If not, best to request one from Alpine. If you have the manual, we can walk you through setup steps to get the most from this combo.

OK, that's a start... what I also need is the model # on that Kenwood HU. Am looking for HU output voltages at RCA's for rear/sub channel RCA's.

input mode: Not sure what options you have here, pls advise!
input level: same ?
input gain factor: Main input gain control for amp input system. Setting this properly depends on the HU output level at RCA's
lp on/off: Lo Pass Filter... ON
lp frequency: Start at 80 Hz.
lp slope select: a 12dB slope is fine
subsonic filter on/off: ON
subsonic filter frequency: Do you know the port tuning freq of this box? If yes, set filter to that number (if not known, set at 40 Hz for now)
p.eq - on/off: This is bass EQ, use "off" setting for now
p.eq frequency: OFF
p.eq width: OFF
p.eq level: OFF
bass comp. on/off: OFF
bass comp. mode select: What selections are available?
tcr on/off: OFF for now
tcr delay time: N/A
phase 0/180: Will play with this one later
amp id no.
turn on delay: What are delay cycle times available? (2 sec is a good start)
output disable on/off: OFF
memory number select: Come back to later
memory write: Come back to later
memory read: Come back to later

Again, this is a very comprehensive and complex amp. Will walk you through the setup steps as best I can. But without a copy of that manual as a reference, I'm flying blind in a few set up parameters. May have to get more details from your manual as we go, to get you dialed in.

Professionally installed only means you paid someone to install the system for you. Were they competent and all amp settings are optimized? If this system does not pound hard, maybe not. Where did you have it installed?

wow swez... may be you can get paid for such kind of install walk thru's if u launch a professional installers site...lol...

swez i don't have a scanner or nothing, but if you want the manual i can send you high res pics of the pages with my digital camera ... heh

KDC-V7022 sorry i forgot to include this in the post.

swez on 11/17/2004 21:13:13
I cannot find that Model number in Kenwood's HU directory. The closest model I can find in that series is a KDC-V7017. This shows an RCA output voltage of 1.8 volts AC to a 10Kohm amp input load.

OK, let's assume your's is similar to this model:

KDC-V7017

Ready for a ColorShock display that will dazzle your friends with 67 colors? Then the 47-watt x 4 channel KDC-7017 CD Receiver with the incredible ColorShock LCD display is your deck. This super single disc player will handle CD, CD-R, and CD-RW discs, AM/FM broadcasts, and is Sirius Satellite Radio ready (satellite receiver is required). Front and rear preouts are included along with a D MASK+ motorized removable faceplate, System Q Sound Control with 5 pre-set EQ curves, Type 3 changer control, 15-character dot matrix readout, and a grip-type remote control.

Does this description match your HU?

Swez

PS If you can take high Res pics of certain parts of your manual and I can read them, it's worth a try. Send me a test page or two via e-mail and we'll see what happens.

input mode - " ch1 --- ch 1+ 2 "
(ch1+ch2) ?

input level - 0.1 - 2.0V / 0.5 - 8.0V

Bass Comp: Bass compensation mode..

1 - on / off
2 - adjustmant range: COMP1/COMP2/COMP3

Delay - 0.0 - 2.0s (0.2s step)

Eaglehaslanded on 11/17/2004 21:17:04
yes thats my deck i'm pretty sure,it's the only flip down kenwood makes that has the colour cycle mode on the display i think heh

swez on 11/18/2004 08:04:44
input mode - " ch1 --- ch 1+ 2 "
(ch1+ch2) ? Yes, use 1+2 summing. This give R&L channel bass input to the amp and a summed output to sub(s)

input level - 0.1 - 2.0V / 0.5 - 8.0V
Use the 0.1 - 2.0 volt selector. Set at 2 volts. This is amp gain setting to match your specific HU.

Bass Comp: Bass compensation mode..

1 - on / off
2 - adjustmant range: COMP1/COMP2/COMP3
These are preset Bass EQ curves. You can experiment with each one to see which sounds best to you. Or, just leave off for initial install. Can try it later when final tweaks are being done.

Delay - 0.0 - 2.0s (0.2s step)
Turn on delay of amp, after the HU is switched on. A 1 second delay is fine or set to 0 delay if you wish.

OK, that covers those phases of the control panel. We can address Bass PEQ after the amp is installed.

Thanks I appreciate the help swez. I havent gotten a chance to set it yet because i've been busy with class, but when I do i'll let you know how it turns out!

swez on 11/19/2004 12:49:46
Sounds good! If you have more questions on the control panel features and what they can do, just add to this thread and we'll keep pressing on toward our final destination... Viola... great Bass!
