Okay, a more technical q for y'all gurus... I have a pioneer DEH-8250 that occasionally shuts off. I checked my wiring twice - all solid, nothing loose. I did notice today that the bottom of the radio was quite warm, which I think is unusual. I have a DVD changer (Kenwood) and a monitor sharing the same circuit - could that be my problem? (I have not blown a fuse....) moe4kim Replies (25) sounds on 11/11/2004 21:50:47 i've had a similar problem with my pioneer deh-p3300.... i solved the problem by replacing the fuse on the back of the cd player from a 10A to a 20A... don't know if that would solve your problem but thought i would let u know UKinstaller on 11/11/2004 21:57:04 be very cautious before putting in a bigger fuse than what comes with it. they are rated for a reason. if there is a 15a fuse in there and you let 30a of current pass through and the stereo doesn't like it, you will blow your unit. also, it's perfectly normal for your stuff to be warm. it should never be burning your hand or anything like that, but HU's can get very very warm and it won't hurt a thing. as for answers to your original question, is there a reset button on the radio?? you can try that and see if that keeps it from shutting off. that might sound stupid but you'd be amazed what a reset button on a stereo can do. when you mentioned that your dvd changer and monitor are using the same source of power, where did you tap in to power from?? if you tapped behind the radio, that could definitely cause some stuff to overload and shut off. -UK moe4kim on 11/11/2004 21:58:55 moe4kim on 11/11/2004 22:04:39 I did tap in behind teh radio, so the three are sharing the van's 10 amp fuse. I'll have to check the book on that reset button. I don't recall there being one. ttocs on 11/11/2004 22:19:20 Check the red wire. Half way down you will see a little black pill shaped piece of plastic. It is a plastic cover over a resistor. They are famous for becomming loose and causing this problem. We always cut them off when I worked at the pioneer dealership as it saved the customer a trip later......... moe4kim on 11/12/2004 08:27:44 interesting... I'll check later today. any idea what that was in there for in the first place? just curious... UKinstaller on 11/12/2004 08:47:02 ttocs, i have run into that before too, i totally forgot about it. however, i didn't know you could cut the resistor out. good to know. -UK ttocs on 11/12/2004 09:51:27 I have never been able to figure out what the resister is for other then to make the customer make another trip back................. They always worked find with it cut out, better I guess since they would not have to come back. moe4kim on 11/12/2004 12:36:29 so having the other two items on the same fuse is okay? Do you suggest that i change that? UKinstaller on 11/12/2004 13:21:20 me personally, and this is more than likely just me, i like to tap in at the ignition harness for anything except for a remote wire. ttocs or swez might better be able to answer that one for you, they know electrical stuff pretty well. whatever you do just make sure all of your power wires are fused. like i said i don't know many people that tap into an ignition harness unless it's absolutely necessary or when doing an alarm or remote start or something like that. but cut off that resistor on the radio and if everything is working good, then i guess just leave it. ttocs what do you think?? -UK moe4kim on 11/12/2004 18:39:08 Okay, on my way home, this HU did another strange thing. The CD stopped playing, but the radios was still on. I couldn't control it from the faceplate or the remote. Got home and shut the engine - radio is still on. I took out the fuse to finally shut it off. The power antenna remained up when I put the fuse back in. Is this another symptom of that resistor prob? I should get a chance to get in there tomorrow am. I want a good game plan before i take this dash off for the 5th time.... ttocs on 11/12/2004 19:28:10 that is a wierd one.. Also try cleaning the faceplate. Remove it and simply rub an eraser over the contacts to clean it. moe4kim on 11/13/2004 15:55:48 I think I have it licked... here's the dilly.... the installation manual said never to supply power to other equipment by tapping into the power lead of the unit, which is what i did w/the DVD changer and monitor. so far the prob has not reocurred, so if you don't hear from me on this topic again, yippee! And remember, R.I.F. !!! ttocs on 11/13/2004 18:34:52 that should not cause a problem. moe4kim on 11/14/2004 14:44:09 All i have to say now is......rats........ Prob is still there, however now it plays longer before it quits... so much for the yippee... gotta get back inside the rasser-frassin dash... ttocs on 11/15/2004 10:28:02 i am guessin thtat is iso-mounted, otherwise you can slide it out from the front. moe4kim on 11/15/2004 12:55:33 true... can't slide it out from the front.... ttocs on 11/15/2004 15:28:12 when you are back there. Turn the key on, and gently wiggle the harness around anywhere there is a connection to try and get the deck to shut off. Also check to see where the deck is grounded at. most harnesses have a ground wire on them, but it may not go to anywhere on the factory side. It could be grounding through the chassis and causing your problem. moe4kim on 11/20/2004 09:06:10 Last request for info before i send this deck to the shop - or the trash. There is no fuse behind the deck, no resistor on the red wire either. i have shook wires and checked the voltages as well. i grounded the deck to chassis because i see a small voltage on the factory harness ground when i turn the headlights on. (this quest is a great van, but the wiring for the factory stereo is a little crazy.) the radio did cut off when i shook the radio harness, but even that was intermittent, and the harness checks out fine. the radio conection is not loose. thanks for your help thus far... ttocs on 11/20/2004 11:46:12 if it cut of intermittenly when you shook the hrns, there is a bad connection somewhere.... moe4kim on 11/20/2004 14:37:03 lemme ask you this, then... will a radio play even w/out pwr to the yellow wire? Cause if I do anything else with this, it will be to bypass the factory harness w/my own red wire to the fuse... your thoughts? and if the yellow wire is needed, well, i'll run my own there as well...... thank God the spkrs work..... when the unit is on.... Pinch on 11/20/2004 23:51:55 I would run a red wire to an accessory wire in the steering column rather than going to the fuse box. (I'd fuse that wire though at like 10 A). As for your yellow wire, yeah that must be hot also before the deck will come on. Run a new wire to your battery (don't forget to fuse that one also, and grommet the hole in the firewall so it doesn't cut into the wire). If that doesn't work, you may have either a failing speaker causing the deck to shut off from time to time, or a bad deck. Pinch ttocs on 11/21/2004 22:52:58 you do need the red and the yellow to get the deck to work. I would personally run them both to the fuse box myself. moe4kim on 03/5/2005 12:52:39 Hey everyone. I have closure on this! I had to deploy, and prior to leaving I sent the unit to the United Radio Service (http://www.ursdealer.com/) for repair. It was shipped back - repaired - within 3 weeks. Turned out to be the faceplate. The repair cost me $92, which included the return shipping. Thanks all of you for your assistance...//m4k ttocs on 03/6/2005 13:17:23 glad to hear it and stay safe..... Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
