Shipment of a Coustic 801DB amp just came in(E-BAY). Used, supposed to work, previous owner used it and it worked great, has been sitting at seller's house for 5 months. She shipped regular fed-ex ground, flat-rate charge, so i dunno if insurance was included. When it arrived today, it was in perfect shape, not a single fingerprint see-able. I tilted it on its side then started shaking it after i heard a small something shaking around from end to end inside the amp. So i open it up, and its a little metal ball, 1/4th the size of a pea, with one sorta flat side, looks like a soldering joint. So i took it out and screwed the guard back on, e-mailed her back about it but she hasn't responded, so i turn to you SWEZ, do ya think it was anything important or will the amp work? -yes, i'm not completely stupid, i realize the only way to find out will be to hook it up, which is what i'm doing tonight, as you know from my other posts a minute ago. -probably just the Fed-Ex guys playing soccer with a random package, and it turned out to be MINE. GRIN Replies (3) swez on 11/11/2004 20:19:12 It sounds like a loose solder ball alright. It could mean nothing or it could mean a solder connection has lost its' solder and performance problems could be an issue now or later. Best to test the amp before you install same. Swez ttocs on 11/11/2004 22:21:39 take it to a shop and have it bench tested. Normal ups shipping has $100 insurance, dunno about fed ex. swez on 11/12/2004 12:23:56 Did you fix that loose fuse holder joint? That's where the solder ball seems to have come from. "De-wetting" of the solder will cause this as often the board or components were not clean when installed. A little IPA (Rubbing alcohol) will cure that and maybe a dab of flux as you resolder the connection. Use 60/40 alloy, (Tin/lead) rosin core flux is best for this kind of work.
