I was wondering how to run dual alternators...I'm still in the process of deciding whether to get another one or just get one HO alt....however, how does using a dual alternator work?

I don't know that we have alot of experience in that area to help. maybe one of the others will suprise me, if not there are other places we can point you.

I have toyed around with the Idea of running multiple alts for a while now. The hardest part is making sure the alternator is perfectly aligned with the belt to make sure it doesnt wear improperly.

How does a dual alternator setup work? Pretty simple actually. Depending on the setup you wish, you can run one alternator to run your stock electricals, then the HO alt to a seperate battery(s) to power your audio system. Other way is to have mutliple alts running one single large system (IE. having mutliple leads from the alternators running to a bank of batteries to run a large system).

In order to really consider the multiple alt idea, how much space do you have to work with? and how large of a system are you going to run? Many times just upgrading to a larger single alternator is more cost and time effective than attempting to run a dual alternator setup. Not only that, but you have to either A. Custom Manufacture a mount that will FIT correctly. or B. FIND a company that makes a setup for your car which will be pricey.

in a truck or suv it can be reasonably easy. in a small car such as your i'm assuming this is for the tibureon anyway. it would be extremly difficult.

if it is for that tiberon I cannot imagine there is much space under the hood........

Thanks for the replies...yeah I know under the Tiburon's hood, there isnt probably enough room...i was just toying with the idea, b/c i dont know if I can get over 180 A alternator for my car, even that i think is pushing it....
I need to check around at alternator places around where i live, and see if someone can do a custiom HO alt for me....thanks again for the replies

i had a '93 ford probe very tight udner the hood i was told the biggest alt i could get was 160amps for it and that was a custom build and install.

That sucks; like I said I need to check around, but if that's the highest A alt (160) I can get for my car, I'm gonna have to be really careful with the amps i choose to run...thanks for the replies

to get the biggest one possible you well have to call places that build alternators... we have several here in portland i'm sure you have several localy as well if your in a decent size city. they can usualy wind them a bit farther then possible from mass produced ones. if 160 is the highest you can get from an auto parts store then i would say they can get 180-200amp alt out of one if you find a good place.
