Hey jay what kinda of bass do you get out of that box? Is it mostly just low or does it pressure good also pretty much im just wondering about the details of the sound quality of the box cuz i might be making my box for my L7 12 and that looks like an awsome box

in my experience slot ported transmision line style enclosures have better SQ then standard ported enclosures. where you tune the box well be where it is loudest though remember that. and like any ported box the frequencies below the tuneing should be blocked out and the frequencies way above the tuning arent real loud. say 50hz or so so say you have a box tuned to 35hz by time you get to 85hz it wont be real loud but 85-100hz is usualy where the nidrange speakers are set to pick up.

i was wondering if the transmission line designed here adds a bit of a time lag to the sound waves.. what about the phase difference then... i am sure there wud be some phase difference because sound has to travel thru those folds and then comes out in the hearing area.. how much is the distance and what wud be the phase difference are important issues here..

comments..??

Un fortuantly i dont know the specifics here just that its supposed to make it sound better then a standard porting. if swez see's this i think he knows more of how this enclosure type operates at least i think it was him i saw post on this topic before.

Actually, the answer is yes! There is a time delay incorporated into this style sub enclosure. (transmission line alignment) The idea is to take the rear bass waves... (180 degrees out of phase with front cone wave) and delay them through the folds in the port system and acoustical damping materials, to produce (as close as possible) in phase output, at the port. This is the beauty of this design. We acoustically couple bass at the tuning frequency to produce a notable increase in SPL in that range. This is especially true at Fs and up to 1 octave below Fs of a given driver. As the frequency climbs, this effect becomes nullified and the speaker acts more like a directly radiating acoustical driver.

This design (TLA) allows both port and direct radiated sound from the cone to be very smooth, color free and bring low frequency audio signals to a very low distortion rate. Result, several dB boost of output in the PTF range. Below PTF, we need to filter out. Above PTF, the dB output drops in a log based slope so that most audio energy is radiated directly from the cone.

Very tricky to design one properly. Size of the box and selection of the driver used are extremely important. I don't know a whole bunch about them. They were orignally designed back in the 1930's. Act very similar to pipe organ tubes. Plenty of deep reading out there, if one cares to go that far.

Hey swez.. that link you posted had tons of knowledge for a geek like me..

Thanks.. I am seriously planning to build one once i get free from the new order i received from spain...lol.. just for your info guys.. i am exporting handcrafted bikinis made from glass beads...hehehehehe..

and after that i shall try incorporating the fundamentals of transmission line and 4th order bandpass to make an innovative design..

anyways swez thanks a lot..

Faded,

The sound that this box put outs is mainly alot of SPL. I went from a sealed to this and the their is a lot more bass coming out. Music like rap and dance music with lots of long low bass sounded amazing, but with music such as classic rock or alternative the bass wasn't accurate enough for me. On faster rock songs the kick drums werent as pronounced as they are with a sealed box. So, I guess it all depends on what type of music you like. If your like me and listent to just about everything I'd go with a sealed box, better all around performance. However, if you just want tons of bass then go with this style enclosure.

Just FYI, I currently have my Type R in my sealed box just cause I didn't always want deeep boomy bass. After using this box on and off I have realized what my tastes in enclosure styles are and I think I personnaly prefer sealed.

Also one more thing about the transmission line/slot vent enclosure. I found that bass above the port tuning frequency wasn't a loud as it was in a sealed box, still good just not the same.

So final thoughts...
Bass Head....go with the transmission/vented enclosure
SQ...uhh "Head"..i guess lol......then go with a sealed enclosure.

If you have anymore questions, dont hesitate to ask me,

Talk to you later,
Jay

thanks jay im pretty much a bass head the louder the better and for a while i had an old 2000modle L7in a sealed box but it was a huge box so i picked up plenty of low bass but not much high bass im pretty much picky and wanting something that will pick up superlows and not really high but normal range i dont know i have a sealed box for my 10's right now but there flip around in the box (i can see the magnet) and that sounds good and it actually made my 10's pick up a lower bass when i fliped them around but my friend has a ported box for his L5 and its alot louder than mine but neway i guess im just looking for the perfect box for my new L7 coming in i listen to alot of rap and i love metal but i dont listen to it much in my car im weird anyway...yup

What would happen if you made a box for one sub and it had two ports one was tuned low and the other was tuned high?

Well if you mainly listen to rap and want tons of bass then this style enclosure is the way to go. Like I said lots of really low bass that his pretty hard. However I have my crossover set around 90hz and the bass that gets up towards that range isn't nearly as pronounced as it is in a sealed box.
