I am replacing the two front speakers (5 1/4") in my 1988 plymouth voyager, and I pulled the right one out and there are six wires going to it. What's the deal? There are the two +/- wires and then there are four other ones going to a black cylinder about the size of my thumb that then go into the base of the speaker? What are those for? I don't want to cut them until I know what they are. I don't have a lot of experience, but I hooked up the stereo in my old car, and all I've ever seen is a +/- going to a speaker. Does anyone know what those are for? Can I just cut and tape them or are they actually important? Replies (7) swez on 10/10/2004 18:14:34 Sounds like an Infinity audio system used here. That 4 wire device may be a matching transformer or part of a amping module. Wait for ttocs to respond on this one before you go any further. He has a lot of experience with Infinity Factory systems. I am not an installer... but ttocs is. He'll know what options to offer. Swez ttocs on 10/10/2004 19:14:49 INFINITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4 of the wires are signals(tweeter and woofer), and the other two are just a switched +12v and ground tu turn the amp on tha powers the woofer(it is small and wrapped aroung the speaker. Is the radio still stock? cplkittle on 10/10/2004 19:15:30 it sounds like a crossover (simple capacitor style). How many wires are in the harness going to the speaker? cplkittle on 10/10/2004 19:17:03 amplified system on a '88 model? minivanmegafun on 10/10/2004 20:14:06 Yes, it is an old infinity tape deck. It was a stock stereo, but I just took that out and put a 1-2 year old Sony CD in. I would have just left the old speakers, but the left one was blown. What should I do? Cut the whole thing out, and run my own wires to the deck, or is it possible to use those wires and not have the trouble of threading wires through the dash? The six wires go back into a black plug-looking thing, and four come out the other end before they are all bound together. ttocs on 10/10/2004 22:59:18 cp-yes the old infinity's could be a bit of a hassle. The amp is actually integreated on each speaker, wrapped around the magnet. Normally when you replace the deck, you will normally get no sound, or just the tweeters from the factory speakers. The pwr wires should be thicker then the signal wires and easily distingueshed. just unplug them while making sure that they are insulated. Try the remaining wires to see if you have a full range signal going to them. You should be able to follow the the wires that go to the amp(next to the pwr wires) and hopefully will have a full range signal. If that does not work then you will need to run a new set of wires. It is not that hard unless you have to remove the consol to get the deck out, even still it is only a couple of extra screws... minivanmegafun on 10/11/2004 01:12:12 Thanks for the reply and the advice. I'll play around with it tomorrow and see it I can get it working. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
