Stereo not working...

Happened after I started my car one day. I got sound for about 2 minutes and it has come on and off somewhat randomly since. Sometimes, if I hit a bump or pothole, or make a sharp turn I can get sound again. Sometiems it can last for an hour or just 10 seconds. I've checked all the external wiring and jiggled the plugin around a bit but got nothing. The only problem is that I get no sound. The display and everything is fine and it never powers off. Thanks for any help in advance.

many things could be wrong here.... loose wire, shorting wire, bad HU, etc.

i would start by jiggleiing every wire from every speaker and from the back of the hu. also try tapping the hu see if it kicks back on. also to make sure its the HU and not a wire get another HU the stock one well work and hook it up if everythign works great then it was your HU. could be a loose terminal, bad conectiong, bad power supply, bad internal amp, etc. if less then a year or 2 old may be covered under warranty.

It's probably rounding about 10 years now. I pulled it out of my old car when it was totalled... Pretty good chance of the parts crapping out by now? If so I think I'll just go buy a new one.

Oh, and might have something to do with it, might not. Sometimes it will eject the CD and will keep ejecting it over and over again. Eventully it will just stop and it's all back to normal. Thanks for the replies.

Hummmm, this sounds like the old HU is dying. You may get display functions and even periodic audio. But, if there are internal devices on the PC boards that control audio amps and such from the power supply, this issue you mentioned often results.

Intermittent performance issues are almost always wiring and power related. Either the power feeds into the HU are suspect, loose, corrosion, damage to wire... or the circuits inside the box (HU) have loose wires, solder joints or something is just plain worn out.

The only other thing that would cause flaky behavior is a shorted speaker line to ground. But that would often affect only 1 channel... the speaker/wire that is shorting out. If the whole speaker system goes out, it's a board level problem.

Do yourself a favor and buy yourself an early Christmas present. Get a new aftermarket HU. This stocker has seen its' better days.

Yeah. Figured that's what I'd have to do. Payday next week so I guess I can treat myself. Thanks for the advice.

are all unused wires insulated?

pintpoint5 on 10/10/2004 19:14:34
umm... No... Don't believe so... I think there are one or two with frayed copper at the end... Explain about this,

sounds like we found it.

When you fade to the front and the problem stops, that points to the rear speakers as having an issue. It is a floating ground radio meaing you have to keep the speaker and signal isolated from ground. Cap off ALL extra wires and I am willing to bet your problem stops.

That got it. There was a frayed rear-left speaker wire from when I first tried to install it and stripped the wrong one. Any idea about the random ejecting?
