Will a Pioneer DEH-MP4600 power these speakers effectively? If not, can anyone offer any advice on a good, relatively inexpensive amplifier? RMS on the speakers are 55 and 50 respectively. Replies (5) uochronos on 10/7/2004 02:45:05 the HU has probaly around 20watts rms. powering them with a 50watt x 4 amp well net a bit fuller sound and be 5-7db louder per speaker. it up to you either way well work. Chronos swez on 10/7/2004 06:06:15 Most newer HU's can offer 18-27wrms x 4. If we double the power per speaker, we pick up +3dB more SPL per speaker. In your case, a 50-75 wrms x 4 amp is appropriate. A little more RMS power is good for a 50 watt rated speaker. Why? You can run the speakers to full wattage and have some room for high transient peaks w/o clipping the amplifier. Result... fuller sound, less clipping and better SQ performance overall. Just realize that small speakers are not designed to reproduce bass well. The crossover settings on the amp should be set above 80-100 Hz., on the 5.25" drivers and a bit higher on the 4". (120-150 Hz.) Swez FYI: This assumes intelligent use of the volume control and a well tweaked HU/amp gain and crossover settings. Not just "turn the darn thing up as loud as we can get it" and then watch the magic smoke come pouring out the speakers or amp. Then ask the obvious question... "Why did my system take a poop?" Doh.... I dunno? PS If I got a dollar for every time I have heard that kind of statement asked on a forum... that would add up to several thousand dollars a year in additional income. No... I am not kidding. It's really that bad! Please, don't be another one OK? SMILE boxand1 on 10/7/2004 13:48:38 I purchased the Phoenix Gold Tantrum 400.4 for $204 with shipping on EBay. Thanks for the help! I have no intention of listening to music too loud... I just like to have good clean sound. Is it likely that I will need to purchase a subwoofer for this set-up as well, and if so, should I buy a separate amp or hook the back speakers to the HU, and wire the sub to two of the channels on the sub? uochronos on 10/7/2004 17:53:00 the 2 rear channels of the amp is only 200watts rms this well push a small sub. but is not much power compared to what most use for sub amps. if your looking for pure SQ this well work well. but wont get real loud. using the amp this way is a great conservation of power and simplicity. other then the lack of power this is a great way to go. so if you dont mind it not getting loud then this is an excelent choice. Chronos boxand1 on 10/7/2004 19:08:38 I don't even know if I will need a sub. All I want to do is listen to music--not loud, not booming, just music. Is a subwoofer necessary to enjoy it? I know the low-range below the 60-80hz range is only 40-60hz (down to 20hz) audible to humans, so is that a substantial enough portion of music so as to require a subwoofer?
