Anyone ever been killed by car audio (SPL levels)?

Just curious.

I saw some system on TV once where the reporter claimed that the guy had to control the volume with a remote cause the pressure inside could stop his heart.

If this could happen, anyone know roughly how many DBs it would take?
Any articles online about this?

I have always heard that once you are up in the 170's, that it would break your bones if you were inside the van it the system was in, and that your heart would stop. i am not 100 percent sure about this though.

I havnt heard of anyone dieing due to SPL lvls but theres a video of a van with 9 Brahma 15s ...at 170dBs it cracked the doorjam metal. ({my eventual goal is 170dB GRIN ). Anything over about 100dBs if i remember correctly will cause damage to your ears. Anything over 150dB will make you feel sick and nausiated hence why most competitors for saftey issues build a consol with the deck that they take outside the vehicle for competition/testing purposes.

Again..personally i havnt heard of anyone passing away due to excess SPL, just hearing issues and feeling sick.

several things to consider here. first off if you where in the car and it was 160+db you would be deaf it would damage your hearing likly beyond repair.

second i dontk know about crushing bones but those kind of preasure changes would be like someone punching you but all over your whole body,

i could see prolonged exposure to high spl being able to stop you from breathing and your heart beating. simply due to the fact under high preasure its harder to breath and harder for your blood to pump,

lastly any system hitting 170db would be many many subs the magnetic field created here would be imense it could interfere with something like a pace maker.

these are all posibilities though i have never actualy heard of a death. but most people arent dumb enough to get in a car while its hiting that hard. and at comps they dont let you period.

I have a video at home on my favorites I will have to send a link to. It is some king of asian type of "jackess" show. They lock some guy in a jbl sponsored car and then proceed to turn up the volume and watch him squirm...

P0werLifter on 10/5/2004 13:17:18
GRIN id love to see that one ttocs lol ...post it if ya could haha

ttocs on 10/5/2004 17:12:39
its entertaining, just because it is not me in there... I would have been cussing up a storm....

P0werLifter on 10/5/2004 17:52:54
yah it would be entertaining to watch because were not the ones in there, just like the show "jackass" because were not the ones getting hurt. If it was me in there, id be more than just cussing up a storm. that would NOT be a very pleasant experience

unless of course you are a super-human made of steel, like myself....

LOL id give you mad props if you sat in a 170dB vehicle for at least a minute UK hahaha, and ill help pitch in for your hearing aids GRIN

I have been installing for 7 yrs, but I still have good hearing. There was a guy that followed me around from shop to shop almost like a groupie. He was in his 40's, probably 50's now who was a little slower then most but a good guy that just liked to talk car audio. He annoyed most people but I realized that he meant no harm, didn't bother me too much.. But anyway, terry was a huge audiophile.. He read all the mags, spent a descent penny on his own vehicles systems, and like I said loved to talk about it so I could not never understand since Terry had worse hearing then most people at a nursing home.... He had to be 2 ft away from with ear cocked at you(so stairing down)you to hear you, probably why he annoyed most people. Don't be that dude...... You cannot be an audiophile if you cannot hear(in most cases). limit your exposure to vehicles over 130db without protection....

P0werLifter on 10/5/2004 23:19:10
Yah I agree...If you go above 120dB's you need to have ear protection in order to ensure the fact that you will have good hearing when your older so you can still enjoy the love of music..and not have it cranked to where everyone hates you lol. Personally i like both worlds..SQ and SPL. for right now my focus is SPL but i wear ear protection above 120dBs. I reccomend everyone else do the same

I think a good question would be..

What type of system can hit over 120DB

Just out ceriousity..

My friend has (2) Phoenix Gold TI15D subwoofers:
Subwoofer Size 15"
Impedance Dual 4 ohms
Dual Voice Coil Yes
Peak Power Handling 800W
RMS Power Handling 550W
Surround Material Rubber
Sealed Box Volume 1.25 - 1.75 cubic ft.
Sensitivity 88dB
Frequency Response N/A
Top Mount Depth 7-1/2"
Cutout Diameter 13-7/8"

and a JBL 1200.1 monoblock how many DB do you think a system like this can pound? I am guessing it's pretty high up there.. Forget about trebble it's nonexsistant in the back seat even with his 6 speaker system but it's hearable in the front.

Total SPL output varies from car to car. Theres many different variables you have to consider when determining output such as What type of car, cabin resonant frequency, airspace available, total wattage to the speakers, Enclosure size and type, Size of port etc.

For 2 15" woofers with 1000watts RMS total id venture to say around 140-150dB's...hard to say really he'd have to get it tested.

ya most systems with over 500watts can hit over 120db.... i would venture to guess my 2 type r 10" subs with 550watts rms would hit around 135+db... i know at full volume it hurt.

things to keep in mind though subs in the trunk well have lower SPL volume inthe cab of the car then say subs in a hatch back, SUV, etc.

your factory radio would push 120 dbs.... I have seen a single 10" in a prefab box hit 132.

Munchiesyumm on 10/6/2004 11:30:42
Thanks guys.

If two 15"s at 1000w RMS can hit 150 than these subs are probably close to that. The JBL 1200.1 is under rated and running them in 2ohm in a sealed box 1.75cf per sub for SPL. And 4 gauge everything with a 100amp switch. (the fuze system melted.. CHEAP POS) We have them in a 1992 Volvo 4 door fullsize 940 but the back seat opens up in the middle and we usually leave it open to let the bass BLAST out.

I wanna check out those radio shack DB meters.

About the sock stereo going 120db.. Maybe if you had real speakers but I am so embaressed by my speakers. They look like someone found them out of the trash can. Stock GM speakers from 1990 are stright up junk. The 6x9 are rated at 20w and the 4x6 are rated at 10w. The first time I pulled a set these out of a pontiac I started busting up laughing. I thought they were for decoration.

My mom showed me an article from a local newspaper or a magazine that showed sum medical studies in were doctors have treated patients that they think could be the cause from spl levels. The patients they treated had a collapsed lung and maybe a hole in there lung. In each case the patient had attended a concert when they had troubles breathing or they had troubles breathing a short time after the concert.

uochronos on 10/6/2004 17:15:59
i would find it hard to belive that a concert could colapse a lung... seems to me it would be safer in a concert hall then a car. the air has somewhere to go in a concert hall its not sealed or as small. in a car the presure has nowhere to go but press on you. and seep out cracks.

not to mention in my slightly stupider days i stood next to 3-7 feet from concert speakrs. and the highs where louder then most cars but the bass isnt as agressive i usualy feel.

i would think a collapsed lung or what not would be caused by other things. i dont know what type of concerts your talking about but i'm assuming rock and i know i have bruised ribs and what not at concerts. so i could see it happening more likly from soemthing crowd related.

although i still would not suggest being like i was and standing next to speakers at concerts.
