Crossovers

This may be a dumb question. . .

I was looking on eBay for rear-fill speakers and came across some infiniti 62.5i's. They're cheap (now) but are advertised without their crossovers. Is there any magic in matching a crossover to a speaker? Would the crossover need to be a specific infiniti crossover to match these speakers?

Thanks for your help.

it would be recommended, but not necessary. Are they coax or seperates?

These are coax.

Coaxials often use a simple cap/coil crossover for the tweeter or just a cap of a given value. In this case, these speakers are more like Comps in a Coaxial array. They have 18dB/octave crossovers to block low to tweeter and probably some kind of filter to block ultra lows to MB part of the speaker. In short, a fairly complex crossover design is used in that model.

You can either contact Infinity and order the passive crossovers that match these speakers, make your own or buy pre-fab crossover units that will work on this speaker set.

Are these speakers going to be amped? If so, can use the HPF on the amp to block lows to MB. (say 80 Hz.) But will have to make/buy a HPF filter for the tweeters. Parts Express has pre-fab 12dB filters for not a lot of $. Can help you in which one to use if you can deternine the crossover freq of the tweeter. This one specifies a 3,500 Hz., filter for the tweeter and a low pass filter for the MB driver.

Hummm, the closest I see at PE is 5,000 Hz., for the tweeter. Too high for the MB driver to do much good. Looks like Infinity brand specifc crossovers are your best option... unless you want to make your own with specified components. (Won't be cheap either) Have been dabbling at this a while on a project and componet parts are pretty expensive.

A new pair of these Infinity's may be a better choice if the price is under $100.00. The filters may run close to $60.00 a set otherwise.

Thanks for the info. I agree that it's probably too much of a hassle to look for the seperate crossover right now. I'll punt and look to buy them together. Not a big deal, just thought that if I could get the speakers for a steal, I'd jump on 'em.

Swez, you say you're building your own crossovers for a project - any reason to build as opposed to buying prefabs? Is it a quality thing, hobby thing, or trying to experiment with different sounds thing?

EC,

Yes... was experimenting with a 3-way enclosure for home audio use. Have 12" woofers, 5.25 MR and 1'' tweeters. Was calculating the target values of the crossovers I was planning to make up... (12dB/octave HPF @ 100 Hz for MR and 3000 Hz for tweets and a LP filter for woofers) By the time I tested my first prototype with some spare parts I had lying around, I noted the MR/Tweets were very loud (high efficiency 94dB @ 1 watt) at low power and the subs were just barely breathing at 50 RMS. (subs are 87dB @ 1w)

After counting all the costs and drawbacks of passive filters, just had to say N/G. Will go bi-amped on this one. Active filters are much more efficient and will be using this option as I press on. Since this will eventually be part of a 5.1 HT system, am building 2 bass cubes. (1 x 12" sealed each) Have Front & rear channel speakers already and a pair of amps.

1. Yamaha Pro P-2050 for mid/highs (50 RMS x 2) Want to find 1 more of this amp version eventually for true 4 channel operation.

2. Peavey Pro CS-800 for subs (400 RMS x 2)

This was more or less an experiment with stuff I had on hand. The Comps (Bahn 5.25" & 1" metal tweeters) are useful... but best in car audio applications. They are too hot and bright for HT use. They provide very good SPL and MB in a good enclosure. But the tweet is so harsh (metallic sounding & shrill) may have to re-vamp the crossover frequencies and add attenuation to mellow them out.

Compared to my Polk 7a Studio Reference speakers... the Bahns are just not SQ enough for my picky old ears. lol

That's all I know...
