Need help with amp to speaker optimization

I am planning on buying a 500W RMS amp, and was wondering what would be the best configuration of subwoofers powerwise. If I had 2 4 ohm speakers, wired in parallel, what would be their maximum RMS wattage...500W or 250W (apiece) thanks for reading this.

btw...the alternator is rebuilt, so i'm just hoping I can pull the amperage of a 500W rms amp, to be safe, and to be within my budget ;-).

seems like you thought this out well i was going to tell you about alternator upgrades but you beat me to that topic i see.... many stock alts 90+amps can handle a 500watt amp with minimum dimming.

as for your question its a bit confuseing... a speakers RMS does not change by how you wire them. just there ohmage. if youu wire 2 4ohm subs in parrelel you net 2ohms if you wire them in series you net 8 ohms...

there rms rating stays the same though lets say these subs are 250watts rms each then no mater how you wire them both subs are 500watts rms together.

now if you have a 2 channel amp that your bridging these are only 4ohm stable which means 2 4ohm subs can work on it because if you run 2ohms to a 4ohm stable amp you well damage it. plus 2 channel amps draw more power from your alternator adn battery then a 1 channel amp.

now most 1 channel amps are 2ohm stable which means 2 4ohm subs in parrelel well match up very nicley to the amp.

when looking for an amp just look for on that is a 1 channel amp stable at 2ohm and puts out the rms watage you need at 2ohm.

any questions?

If you have 2 subs and each are 4 ohm, (single coils) if we know the RMS power handling of each sub, then we can help you find a decent amp to power them. What subs are you considering?

For subs, the best option in amps are Class D or T amplifiers. They are very efficient and deliver best bang for the buck and easier on the electrical system in a vehicle. Your Buick... if it has the venerable 3800 engine, stock ALT is usually 105A. If that model has the electric windshield heater system, then your likely to have a 140A ALT in that model. I managed to fit a 120A Olds ALT in my 92 LeSabre. A larger casing, had to re-clock it... but it went in good.... TIGHT FIT!

Say more about the subs you are thinking about and we can help you find an amp to power them. Something in the 250-300 watts RMS class per sub would be about the limit here, if you have a 105A ALT. That leaves ~50A for the amp and 55A for the car.
