96 explorer factory radio error

what's up guys,

i worked on a guys car today, and everything was perfectly fine when i started working on it. i was adding four speakers and an amp (for subs) to the factory system of a JBL-Ford system in a 1996 explorer. after pulling out the radio and tapping in for my remote, undoing the positive terminal on the battery to add the power wire, and hooking everything back up, the radio is stuck on the word "phone". you can adjust the volume, but nothing comes out of the speakers. i tried disconnecting the back seat headphone outputs, undoing everything i added, and a lot of other stuff, it is stuck on the word "phone".

anybody ever heard of this?? real nightmare. customer was pretty upset. any help would of course be appreciated.

oh yeah, i forgot some critical information. the radio DOES funtion properly if I pull the fuse for the cell-phone in the kick panel, however, the system information such as gas mileage, distance traveled, etc. dims out. the radio will continue to work, but if you close the door, it returns to saying "phone" even if the cell-phone fuse is still pulled. crazy huh??

Sounds like a dealer answered question to me. This HU may have anti-theft devices and once you pulled the BAT connection, that code was erased and may have to to be re-programed into the HU.

Also, look in the owners manual for that vehicle and see if it has a reset code or device to return system to normal operations.

I think you tapped the wrong wire? There should be a cell phone mute wire that you may have it. Try disconnecting your wire and see what happens.... Never seen this..

how was the sound? I am betting you were wanting more sound from the sub?

nah, i tapped into the ignition wire behind the radio. we disconnected it and the radio was still messed up.

i hooked up a 2 channel amp in the guys car, he has yet to buy subs, so i couldn't hear them. the amp was working fine though. anybody have any clue as to what color the cell-phone mute wire might be?? i could cut that bad boy and see what happens. thanks for the input.

oh yeah, there's no theft protection on the radio.

I will check my books tonight and see if there is a cell phone wire. Ford likes to put a sticker on the back of the radio that tells the wire colors, might want to start there..

that would be cool i'd appreciate that. maybe if i cut the wire i will everything will work. i guess if there is a cell phone wire, for some reason it is getting 12 volts?? and that's why when i pull the cell phone fuse it works. interesting.

does he have a factory cell? Leave the fuse out?

UKinstaller on 09/14/2004 14:00:46
no factory cell. if the fuse is pulled, all of the electronic information such as gas mileage and temperature and stuff doesn't work. the radio will work with the fuse pulled, but only when the door is open. funky. any more suggestions?? were you able to find if there was a cell phone wire or not??

sorry for the delay.

I checked my books but I don't have anything listed for phone mute. I am not saying it is not there, my books just do not reference it. I didn't think ford used a cell phone mute but I must be wrong.

Pull the deck out and start checking voltages on wires with that fuse in and out. If you find a wire that changes, see where it goes, if it is shorted....

If all else fails try disconnecting it and see...
