Clarion Crossover

Hey guys,

I'm back again for an opion from the #1 car audio site on the net. Just a quick question, I am looking to get a crossover that has a SSF and remote bass controls. I have found one here from a place called Autosonics in Ontario its the "Clarion BCX100", 3 way selectable LPF, remote bass control and a subsonic filter@25Hz for $100 CDN.

What I'd like to know is would this work with my ported enclosure that is tuned @ 35Hz? From what I have read you should set the SSF to where your box is tuned too, but the place who has this part said 10Hz lower wouldn't make that much of a difference.

Thanks,
Jay

PS do you know any other product like this from another maufacturer that is better and for the same approx. price?

what exatly are you looking for here? what do you need the crossover for? i ask because most HU's haev a suffiecient crossover for most people. and most HU's have a bass boost feature. to control that.

as for an SSF you can get one from www.thezeb.com, www.crutchfield.com from harrison labs they are f-mods and simply plug into your rcas then into the amp.

My HU doesn't have crossovers or a sub control on it. So what I am looking for is a SSF for my vented box and remote bass control. And for the crossover thing, I don't really need it but when those SSF's from crutchfield are going to cost me about $50 Canadian or more to get them here then why not spend $50 more and get the remote sub control and SSF together. Also, I don't think the crossover is very good on my JBL 300.1 it almost sounds as if its letter higher freq. to pass but I cannot really tell for sure.

So for me to spend $100 on a SSF, Remote bass control, and a better crossover then the one on my amp doesnt seem like that bad of an deal to me.

But again about the 10Hz difference on the SSF compared to my tuning frequency would that have any bad effects on the sub etc?
My enclosure tuning freq. - 35Hz
Sub Sonic Filter Freq. - 25Hz

Thanks,
Jay

Gee Jay, for a thinking person... this is a tough call huh? I don't think I'd go for a fixed 25 Hz on your sub system. That's 1/2 octave below PTF. It does sound like a small matter, but am thinking you really need something closer to 35 Hz., for your SSF. There's usually some bass energy below 40 Hz, less below 35. But if you did a CD that has some very heavy low end bass, that would have some SS harmonics. Better to get it out than toss a woofer.

As for the amp LPF, it should be set somewhere in the 75-100 Hz range. If you hear vocals or other non-bass signals coming from the sub, dial back on the LPF until it is gone. The dial may be slightly out of calibration. The setting position is not the key... removing all non-bass signals is what is to be done.

PS You do have some remote control over your sub at the HU. By boosting or cutting the bass tone control on your HU, this will boost/cut bass to amp as well.
