what are the advatages of running a dual setup also what are the disadvatages i am putting a small system in my truck but when i do things like the power windows the dash lights dim a lil someone said that a dual setup would be a good idea i am running 2 12's with a 1600 watts max amp and eventually will have more speakers and a smaller sub but want to setup the batterys now if i should have 2 anyway thanx for listening to my rambling and thanx for the help Eric Replies (3) uochronos on 09/9/2004 18:00:13 a better alternator would be better then a second battery.. a 200amp alternator well handle most systems unless you get into really high wattages say 1500+rms P0werLifter on 09/9/2004 23:41:21 Theres a couple of us who have wrote some articles in the DIY area of the website that deals with chargins systems/Power Systems that could answer some of your questions. Dual Battery setup would not be in your best intrests right now. If your alternator cannot keep up with the amperage demand as it is, adding another battery will only compound the problem. Stock automobiles come with about a 100amp alternator. It takes 50-60amps to run your stock electricals In order to find out how large of an alternator you need, get the total wattage of your system, divide that by the efficienty factor of the amplifier (im assuming its a class D for your subs..they are about 90% efficient, then divide that by 13.5 for your charging systems voltage. 1600/ 0.9= 1777.77----1777.77/13.5 = 131amp draw alone just for that amplifier. Tack on another 60amps for stock electricals and whammy you need 191 amp alternator to keep this system running correctly. If your having minor difficulty with your lights dimming, then upgrading to a high CCA battery 850cca or higher, upgrading your pwer and ground leads from th alt to the batt..batt to frame..and engine block to frame, might help but its my speculation that you will need a larger alternator. Once you get your charging system up to par, then you can move on to dual batteries. Hope this helps -Jason swez on 09/10/2004 09:35:51 Those who choose or need additional batteries for their sub systems usually have a dedicated ALT for the amps. The stock car electricals will manage the basics, HU and a small amp or processors. But for the "Big Guns", a second ALT and battery array, is the ultimate way to go. The cheaper option here... a larger that stock ALT system and larger CCA rated BAT with larger power wires from ALT/BAT, BAT/GND and 2X grounding strap off engine to grounded body.
