Im looking for a pure SQ sub for my girlfriends car. Im thinking of 2 10's. It will be goin into a 96 or 97 cutlass. Nothin to pricy here though maybe around $300 for just the subs. What do you guys think of the Polk Momo's, they've caught my eye and i kinda want to try them out.

I personally havent heard much about the Polk Momo's but im sure someone on the board has, I know Alpine Type R and Adire Shiva Subs are awesome for Sq though from what ive heard, might be worth your while to check those out, adire shivas run about $125, im not sure about the Alpines.

Im sure Swez, ttocs, Chronos, or some of the others will be along shortly

Shivas, JL, apline type R, and elemental designs just to name a few all make good SQ subs. you can get 2 of any of these subs for under 300$ even JL if your going with just SQ the JL W0 well work dont need alot of power to get SQ. alpines or ED would be chapest around 200$ for a pair of 10's.

Agreed.. all sub noted are well priced, solid SQL performers and don't need a huge amp to make them sound good. In most cases, these subs will take 250 watts or higher.

The JL W0 series is less... 125 watts per sub I think is their power rating. Alpine SWR or SWS series are very solid performers available in 10" as are the eDesign line. Adire Shiva only come in 12" model. Very capable subs here too. Do well in small enclosures too. Great lows.

The Infinity Reference line is also a very good SQ sub. This one has a very nice price too. Under 80.00 each and take about 250 RMS each. Similar to Alpine in many ways, but if you shop hard, can get a very low price on a fine SQ sub. Infinity 1030w is a 4 ohms SVC and I have seen them on the net for under 75.00 each.

Well i had a pair of WO's before i like them but alot of people around here are runnin WO's and W3's so i wanna stay away from that and be different. Also theres alot of people are running the type r's and s's so i wanna have something different. I have a brahma and i love it so the shivas our in mind. And were getting her brother the Infinity Perfects so i dont want to have the refrences in heres. Yea im being picky i know but I have to be different. So for now the Shivas are in mind. But what I really want to know is if anybody has heard the Polk Momos or heard good things about them and if they would be a good SQ sub. So does anyone have any info. on them? Thanks for all the replys so far.

the momos look like a decent sub from specs... although the 150$ retail seems a bit high for them when ED, alpines, etc can all be had for less and give great SQ... also adire shivas is only 125$.

so i dont know what to tell you i would say go listen to them at a shop... polk is a fairly widely sold product should be a seller near you.

Polk MOMO is a fine SQL sub. Nothing to blush away from. I have heard them in the MOMO enclosure and yes, they sounded very good in a show room. These were 12" version. A good small sealed enclosure sub.

Not sure if you mentioned how much power you want to use or amp you may have in mind. Just note the MOMO is a 4 ohm SVC (400 RMS) and the Shiva is a 8+8 DVC. (4 ohms in parallel each, 650 RMS)

Actually, a single sub that gets 400-600 watts RMS @ 4 ohms will be fine. The best amp to use here, is a 2 channel sub amp, bridged to MONO. However, if you must have dual subs, then a Class D amp, capable of 2 ohm loads and can deliver 600-1000 watts RMS, will be very potent and expensive. The larger the amp current draw, the more likely she will experience electrical issues... lack of adequate current from the stock ALT/BAT.

Shiva's sound great in sealed box or ported

I talked it over with her and we started to go with the Shiva's. Swez do you think a single Shiva would be fine or 2? I dont know if you've heard a shiva but would you be able to compare it to a pair of 12" WO's?

ryan on 09/4/2004 11:05:29
I take that back its either the Shiva's or Polk Momo's. I got a reply on another forum from a guy saying he has 2 12" polk momo's brand new in box for $100 each plus shipping. So i sent him an email with sum ?'s and we'll see if he sounds like an honest person and ask around. So we'll see waht happens

If anyone can tell me the recommended size for the Shiva in a sealed box I would appreciate it. I cant seem to find it on adires site.

adire has a large spectrum of sizes for theer drivers... there drivers are at home in small to large boxes and they jsut differnt in how much power it can take in that box... there is a chart of box sizes somewhere on tehre site i well try adn locate it for you.

I built a custom sealed box with 2 Shiva's for a customer a while back. He specified 1.5 cf/chamber. It came out well, but the bass was a bit on the boomy side for my personal tastes. (box too large)

He had a 600 watt RMS Sony MONO amp and this system did boom well in a full size Dodge Intrepid. I also tested it on my shop amp @ 300 RMS and they did sound full and clean. Not as much boom as the shop is much larger and less cabin gain effects. I use no bass EQ to boost them either.

I would highly recommend 0.9 -1.25 cf per sub chamber sealed here. If she like lots of low end bass, use 1.25 cf design. If she likes punchy bass more, then go a bit smaller to a tad under 1 cf.

The 25.5 (.85 cf) liter box design in Adire's data base is good for punchy bass. But, the Adire bracing system is total overkill on small enclosure designs. More work than it is worth. Pretty compact for dual 12's and cabin gain effect will boost low end bass by some 12-15dB below 100 Hz. In all, good punch, good low end bass too.
