hey i'm getting a 1970 mustang grande next month from a friend. i'm putting a 429 in it so i should be able to get a large alternator. i want to put a decent system in it but not damage any of the panneling... i plan to gut the trunk to get rid of the little rust in there and then build a custom box for my set of alpine type r's.. plan to port them and run them off a 300watt amp. dont need alot of bass just good sq. i plan to install a sony CD HU in the glove box so it is hidden and wont damage the dash by cutting into it.

then i plan to get a set of components for the front 1inch tweeters and 4" mids. unsure of make i dont need anything expensive and i want to run them off the HU so not too high of a rms rating...

basicaly i want to know what the best way to do this install is. i can run all enw wires myself and all that. just want to know if there is anything i should be watching out for or anything else that can go wrong in an older car like this.

thanks in advance guys.

With a 429 engine, I assume you'll be using headers and such. Road noise, engine and exhaust noise may be an issue for you here. Depends on how much performance you want from this vehicle. Am sure you will have to do a fair amount of sound deadening and such. These older cars had very little sound dampening technology.

Sounds like a great project in the making here. Loved those older Stangs... especially the fastback designs.

ya its going to be quite loud... thats why i ddont want to spend a ton on it just soemthing to listen to music on. as it sists the 8-track doesnt even work hehe.

ya its a nice car getting a hell of a deal from a friend who just bought and restored a '71 mach 1 so he is getting rid of this one... it's a 1970 mustang grande all power windows and locks work, only 2 spots of rust on the whole car one was around tail light and i helped fix about a year ago. and some rust starting under vynl top which i well fix right away after getting car.. comes with 2 rebuilt trannies and a 351 clevland that runs good.

i know with a 429 and header its going to be loud asw hell and i dont plan to be able to hear the stereo great but it would be nice to have some sort of music. after all i well have to be able to play the dukes of hazard theme song as i drive around.

PS

biggest thing is i dont want to cut into this car's dash doro pannels etc... i may have to find or buy custom kick pannels to mount speakers. i'm just unsure of options here

I had a 65' Mustang convertible that I didn't want to touch the dash w/ so I installed the HU in an under dash kit that mounted nice (just 4 little holes underneath that couldn't be seen) As far as speakers go I'll leave that up to others that have more experience than I.

First thing i would do personally, is sound deaden the whole car, with like 2 layers of Brown Bread or B-Quiet, to cut down the engine/road noise. I know in my truck i have a 5.7ltr V8 350 (cut off the muffler) and with 150sq feet of sound deadning in my truck..its still loud.

Then go ahead with your deck, I know they have HU's that will fit in the stock radio section, then hide the disk changer under your seat (but those are a bit pricey i think),,the HU in the glove compartment like a solid Idea, might be a lil bit tricky can be done.

As far as speakers, go with kick panels bro,,,,good stereo imaging and better than door speakers..not only that..but you wont have to do any cutting, as far as the back soundstage, that might be a bit tricky,,,if its not too corny id go with some Pods that fit in the corner between your window and the rear panel to avoid cutting unless there already are speakers there.

Then go with the subs in the trunk, im sure you dont need help in that area lol,,,Id reccomend going with the Transmission line enclosure, Still good Punchy bass at lower Lvls, and good SPL from my own experience now.

Forgot to add....My buddy has a 67 Stang and with his system, he's had issues with the original wiring, and bad grounds...thats the main issue from what ive gathered, other than that...as long as you cover your electrical basics,,,your good to go

as for the HU i have one i'm going to use i dont want to spend a ton of money on the stereo for this car just need somehting that can get some music out...

i well deaden the car if i have the money when i gut the interior but honestly most the time i want to be able to hear the engine hehe. i'm not building a killer system just want somehting to listen to from time to time 80% of the time it well probaly be off. i'm figuring under 200 for an amp and 2 speakers

also just so you guys know they changed everything pretty much in 69 so anything earlier then thats going to be alot differnt. plus since this is a grande it has all the extras in it so more electrical crap to deal with then normal.

thanks for the info so far guys/

Not sure on this, but stock radios used common grounds for speakers back then. Since you are installing a newer HU, running all new speaker wiring will probably be the best choice here.

I agree, kick panels or custom pods for the front speakers will be less messing with the OEM looks of the car. Are there any speaker holes in the rear deck on this model Stang? If so use them. If not, consider surface mounted boxes on brackets or gymbals for the rear stage. The sub... if you go that route is pretty much a no-brainer for your skill levels.

ya i already figured all new wires... and no there are no rear speakers stock. i figured 2 front speakers would work well enough for this application... maybe add rear speakers later. ya i looked at the car last night again and i think kick pannels are defiantly the way to go..... any suggestions on how to cover them so people cant see they are there? could i use a light strechy spandex type material to make a cover for them without distorting sound? i dont want to incourage breack ins to this car.

ya i think i may just go weith a single alpine type R ported. i well get the same bass i had from 2 sealed and take less power and less rooms.

thanks for the help
