Me again on the distribution block.

A little more info from me on the distibution blocks. I am looking for recommendations on using (2) $25 distribution blocks when I could just solder a Y. I am using 4ga. wire in my boat both cables (+/-) go 22' to the battery. I need to split the 4ga. at the amps so I have a pair of 4ga. and a pair of 8 ga. I was thinking of stripping off about 1 inch of the cover about 6 inches from the end and soldering in the 8 ga. to the side of the 4 ga. then shrink tubing the connection. There is no metal or any problems with protecting the area soldered because it's all up under the instrument panel on a well protected platform. Does anyone see why not using a distrubution block would be a problem?
ps.I solder quite good.

That is the correct way for what you are doing as recomended for remote starts just when you strip the 4 ga stick a screwdriver throught the middle and open it up then make the 8 ga long enough to put through the 4 and wrap around a couple of times locking itself in and solder it and that is the right way I just didn't have all the information there are very few people I have met that know or take the time to do this method so congratulations for not T-Taping (LOL)

Thanks Wealot53,
It just seems the way to go. Sorry for the krappy 1st question. The idea to open the wire was just what I needed to jog my memory about the proper way to join them. Of course I will be leaving myself enough wire in that area, just in case I ever need to change the configuration. These days it looks like all the kids just run to the stores and dole out whatever it takes to make the stereos look cool. Who cares if I don't have pretty little gold blocks that are encased in cute little holders so all my friends can crawl up inside my console and say Wow!, cool, and awsome. Because when all 6 of my friends do that I doubt anyone else would ever even see it again. Then again? Naaa! lol!

I'm 27 been doing this for about 10 years and most of the gold I do in custom installations have no use just short wires through The amp rack for looks most wiring I install is easily accessed for troubleshooting but your right I like it to look the same when Im finished as when I started all stealth Good Luck

don't forget the importance of the weatherproofing heatshrink that's the key element in making it work

That was my thought as well... don't forget the heat shrink tubing to cover your lines after soldering. Just pull it well back out of the way when soldering so it does not shrink before you are done soldering.

Also, since this is such heavy gage wire you are mending together, may need a mini-torch to generate enough heat to melt the solder deep into the weave. Might want to practice a bit before the real deal. This type of mending takes a little practice.
