hey guys looking for something new. my wife well be getting a new vehicle soon either a 86-92 jeep cheerokee or a dodge mini van. she likes high spl not real big on SQ but doesnt want bad distortion, i'm looking to use ported box and i want 2 or 3 12" subs i want 2 or 3 just because of the looks i want to design here. if 2 i want the power handling to be around 200 per sub handling in a ported box or 3 subs at 150per sub in a ported box. i would like to spend 50-100$ per sub. also looking for reasonably small box well small for ported. around .8-1.3cubic feet per sub. looking to tune these at around 40hz ok any suggestions? thanks in advance Replies (24) swez on 08/17/2004 17:04:48 Try Sony... at a garage sale. They are cheap used...(especially the blown ones) Bet you can get a blown one for $10.00/ea. Box size is no matter... Blown speakers don't care what size you use or the power you throw at them... had you going there for a moment huh Chronos? SMILE Looking for some cheap, medium power subs? Try this link as they do have the low prices and some decent subs too: http://www.justwoofers.com/ Swez uochronos on 08/17/2004 17:09:46 hehe i must have 5 blown sony subs i should sale them at the going price of 10$ each i could make a bit of money:) thanks for the link uochronos on 08/17/2004 17:30:34 it seems very hard to find a 150watt rms driver these days.... that site you gave me has lots of great deals but everything seems to bhe 300watts rms or more...... lol never thought i would complain about that... i was thinking one of these brand though as i know they all make 150watt rms subs MTX, lightning audio, MA audio, or audiobahn. these catch my eye a little higher then i want rms but this look good for my application http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=293-352 what do you guys think of cerwin vega i always liked there home stuff.... http://www.thezeb.com/detail.aspx?ID=1133 and then these 2 lighting audio susb although i cant seem to see alot of differnce they both handle 150watts rms http://www.thezeb.com/detail.aspx?ID=1875 http://www.thezeb.com/detail.aspx?ID=1875 any comments on any of these guys... rmember i'm going to give these 450watts total for 3 subs or 300watts with 2 subs. in ported box P0werLifter on 08/17/2004 19:33:48 I use to own a pair of MTX 6000's 12" subs. I was very pleased with them, infact id reccomend MTX as an awesome brand. My buddy also had a set of MTX 4000s and they were a good entry lvl sub. I havnt heard much on lighting audio subs. But as far as Cerwin Vega....Back in high school i remember a guy having 4 Vegas in a ported enclosure that wasnt that bit and he was hitting very high numbers ({but he was in a Honda Hatchback}}. Vegas or MTX are a good choice here in my opinion for the price range. -Jason uochronos on 08/18/2004 02:29:44 my gut says MTX but i want to be adventurous and try soemthing new hehe and i have done a couple MTX systems... i may go with the Cerwin Vegas... i have been please with there home stuff for cost they are great sounding set ups usualy/ P0werLifter on 08/18/2004 03:38:23 Yah either one is a good choice. The dude that had the 4 Vegas was running the VMax series if i remember correctly (300Rms). Its going to be tricky to find a subwoofer thats around the 150RMS range it seems anymore that everything is about 300 on up =( -Jason uochronos on 08/18/2004 06:20:44 ya i really could use just one sub but i would prefer the look of 2 or 3. because i plan to make it look cool. have some great things floating in my head hehe... i may just find some 4ohm drivers from [parts express or other parts place that are no flash no frills type thing and try that out. uochronos on 08/18/2004 06:33:15 lol changed my mind again i have decided on 4 of the lighning audio subs havnt decided on the 10" or 12" but i plan on using 4 of them now i need to find some amp choices 600watts at either 2 or 1 ohm... the lightning audiio subs are fairly cheap and i think theyn well perform well for spl... i just have to make sure i can get specs for a ported box. swez on 08/18/2004 12:02:20 Have you noticed it's easy to offer great advice to others, yet sometimes challenging to remain objective when doing some of our own pet projects? I have at times. CV is pretty old school stuff. They were top of heap back in the early days. Today, just one of many vanilla flavors out there. The Lightning Audio gear is not too bad. If I recall, they are a sister division of Rockford now. They have a few very nice subs. Swez P0werLifter on 08/18/2004 14:16:11 Very True Swez, its easy to offer advice to other people but when your the one designing your system and ask for others opinions etc. Somewhere in your mind you already have an idea of what you want, or already know so its hard to sway you from it. Its challenging sometimes to remain objective like you said. Personally i have heard Lightening Audio Subs but i have used some of their products before. And if their a sister diviision of Rockford,,,you'll be safe with that decision i believe. GRIN Goodluck and let us know how it turns out ~Jason uochronos on 08/18/2004 16:51:14 hehe i have never bui8lt anything for SPL i know what i want it to look like because i have room to make it look nice. hmm what little info i can find on the LA subs makes me think they arent meant for ported enclosures..... may have to go with soemthing else.... i think i well fanagle a JBL bp600.1 since it is stable at 2 and 1 ohm. stinking sub companies not making good 150watt subs hehe P0werLifter on 08/18/2004 16:57:15 GRIN im much more into SPL than i am SQ hehe. I hate it when you dont get much info on the driver you want,,,i was looking for specs on the Vegas lastnight...their website didnt haev any of the values i was looking for...gets irritating lol although i did see their new prototype StrokerPro Series....I started drooling the 12" weighs 89lbs and has XmaX value of 3"s one way....OOOO SOOOO much SPL i might have to wait and buy myself 2 15"s GRIN if you got any questions ill do my best to help u on your path to earshattering, Eye wattering SPL Bliss ;) Jason uochronos on 08/18/2004 17:20:37 lol its going in the wifes car dont need to make her deaf just want alot of boomy spl... i was also considering 4 10" audiobahns but i dont know if 10" subs well get as deep and boomy as she liks my 10" alpines where not boomy enough for her. if you want to see crazy SPL and XMAX goto phoenix gold there new sub has a 4" one way xmax and there bnew amp is a momster it is a 4 channel; sub amp it is 2500watts rms at 2ohm per channel at 14.4 volts. 10000watts rms total. P0werLifter on 08/18/2004 17:55:14 I might have to take a gander at those PG's...as far as 4 10's go...they should do alright with the right enclosure. Bahn is a pretty good SPL subbrand if your going for the deep frequencies. As far as them getting as deep as a 12...that might pose a problem...But she shouldnt really tell a major difference if u tune the enclosure to 40hz..they should do fine around there. compvr15s on 08/18/2004 19:08:33 i have heard 4 12s of kickers comp vrs in an isobaric box. they were extremely loud, so i could only imagine how loud 4 in a ported box would be, not too sure on tens, not many ppl around here have 10s. i know the comp vrs are arnt very expensive and are great for spl. have heard a set of 12 inch JL W0s runnin about 125 watts each they werent too bad lackin the bump also heard a set of the new rockford fosgate low level subs off the same amp, much more bump than the W0s. just my input, good luck with ya setup/ swez on 08/18/2004 20:52:24 The bump is a combination of cone displacement, X-max and the enclosure we use. To the question... will 10's get low... YUP. The larger enclosure is key to that and maybe a few dB of bass boost too. Swez uochronos on 08/19/2004 16:05:55 i had total forgot about kicker for spl application... i think i like kickers comp's... i very likly may go with those because i know i can trust them..... and at 125watts rms per sub for the 10" subs or 150watts rms for the 12" thats perfect for what i wanted to do. and from what i have heard they like larger ported boxes which is perfect. compvr15s on 08/19/2004 21:48:11 yea they sound really good in large ported boxes, high amounts of spl. i heard an explorer with 2 12s in a smaller sealed box running off the kicker kx400.1 i would bet that it was almost as loud as my 2 15s running off their own kx600.1 ina large box... should be very happy going this route, and i know they are pretty cheap on ebay, i think like 125 for a pair or maybe even less.. good luck uochronos on 08/19/2004 22:39:51 i think i can probaly find the comps for under 100 if i look hard... i'm getting the comps not the comp vrs. thanks for the reminder that kicker was out there hehe compvr15s on 08/20/2004 09:57:16 oh yea no problem, lol i didnt even know they still made the comps, havent really looked i guess but i know the local stereo shop dont sell them anymore, do they compare well to the vrs? i heard 4 ol' school 10 inch comps of a pair of RF 250.2s the box was poorly designed, like 3/8 plywood.. not tightly sealed at all but even with the air leaks it was pretty loud.. good luck, hope she likes them... thats awesome that shes into that, i tried to get my ex g/f to let me put my system in her car when mine went down. she wasnt having any part of that, whenever she rode with me i either had to shut the subs off or set the sub output to like -12. lol she didnt like them at all. uochronos on 08/20/2004 10:22:22 here favorite song on my system is regulators and she loves it because when you go thrwe the mall parking garge it sets off alarms when it hits above 120db or so at those real low frequencies./.. its a bit frigthning how much she like it really:) compvr15s on 08/21/2004 12:07:47 lol yea thats fun, i used to drive the park in my little town of about 2400 people durning the 4th of july firework shows,, they light the FWs from the park so everybody would park on the side of the roads leading through the park.... as i would drive through with the system up i could set off probably 30-40 cars with every pass lol. then once the big boomer fireworks started probably 100 or more cars went off at once, was really a neat thing.. just be careful i know the law around here is pretty nice but i know some areas it seems like they are looking for lil reasons to pull just about everybody over, loud music to some is unacceptable... uochronos on 08/21/2004 12:14:48 ya in my area luckily not illigal for loudness till after 10pm and even then the cops never ticket for it for some reason. but alot of the smaller towns around get pissy as hell... had a friend get a ticket for his stereo he had no subs in it either just had the windows down because it was hot and as he went by the cop he heard the stereo so he ticketed him. got to love how a cop can decide its over 100decibals just by ear and give you a ticket... swez on 08/21/2004 19:12:53 I'd have the vehicle tested with an SPL meter for max output. Probably well under 100dB if not amped. Then go to court and fight the ticket with a signed affidavid stating the systems maximum performance. That will beat any cops word who has a hard nut for noise. However, some larger communities, (the Ritzy ones especially) clamp down hard on excess noise from car systems. Some use a 50 -100 foot measure. If they can hear you at that range... a ticket. Why? Because there is too much abusive noise on the streets today. Some idiots boom late at night through residential areas and this gets the taxpayers to take action. Hey, if you paid 10 grand a year or more for property taxes, you'd have a SAY in politics and laws of that community too. Boom responsibly, Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
