I am beating my head against the wall on this one: This is a simple factory HU replacement problem. I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with factory Infinity system. The factory HU stopped accepting CD's, they won't slide in anymore. I forced one but it only went in as much as I forced it and then spit it out and displayed an Error text on the display. So, I pulled out my Alpine 7874 from my wrecked Nissan and bought a quick adaptor for Chrysler-to-Alpine wiring and a universal deck mount. I installed the HU and the radio works great but the CD makes no music. It accepts the CD, reads it, and starts reading the track just like it is playing it...but no sound comes out. I noticed that the factory deck has 2 connections more than the wiring adaptor allows: one pair of wires, one marked red and the other white that connected to a 2 conductor slot on the back of the factory deck and the other is a black slot connector that is probably ground for the factory HU. Any ideas? I would be happy with either fixing the CD problem in my factory HU or getting the Alpine to play CD's sound. Is the Infinity factory system the culprit or maybe the wiring adaptor? The wiring adaptor just sends audio to the speakers, though, and since the Alpine's radio makes music, I assume that the CD would send the same signal levels through the adaptor. Thanks for any help you may provide! This site is a HUGE resource for DIY-ers! Thanks! The amp system is powered on during radio playback because the solid blue is trying to power the power antenna and thus powering the system while the radio plays. However, when the CD is playing the antenna is not needed and that wire is shutting off the amp system during CD playback. I guess that makes sense. I will try it and reply back with the results. I hope this helps anyone else with similar problems. Thanks, Matt ILikeBass on 06/4/2003 01:09:32 Well, what you could do , is dedicate the blue wire ( reffered to as the Remote wire ) to a 12V source and you could put a relay switch in the middle of it, it would act as a kill switch , you could tell the amp to turn on and off when you want. Just a thought, cause i know it has always been cool to add switches SMILE, people look at it and go OOOOHHHH AHHHHH, i don't know, maybe it's just me but i like it when someone has that look on there face like it is the most awsome thing on earth. ttocs on 06/4/2003 14:34:59 scosche was right. just swap the wires and it will work fine. Are you getting full range sound no the radio now? Sometimes with the infinity systems you will get just treble out of them as without a little work all you pwr are the tweeters. If you decide to add a sub later you will need to bypass the factory amps otherwise it will sound very bad. Factory amps are always gained so high, and have so much distortion, that when you add a nice sub and amp they are just barely starting to sound good when the factory system is well past the clipping point. yprog2112 on 06/5/2003 14:23:12 Switches do rule. Thanks for help guys. Scosche was spot on. Everything works. ttocs, I did have full range with the radio on. The amp was simply being turned off during CD play. I miss my behind-the-wheel audio controls. I wonder if there is a fix to make those controls control an aftermarket deck? If I do add a sub, though, I would definitely, bypass/rip-out that Inifinity amp - the setup isn't half bad for a factory system but I will never understand why automakers don't dump their current in-house systems and contract with aftermarkets. That would rule. Consider the possibilities. Order your car, then configure your system from Alpine or I guess GM makes too much from Delco and the others have the bed partners as well. But damn, have you ever looked at some of the invoice costs for decent 'premium' factory system options for new cars. At upwards of $1500, I certainly think Alpine would kill to partner with one of the big ones. Infinity already does though and they have limitiations too. Damn. Later, Matt Swez on 08/28/2003 06:47:04 That's exactly why Ford, GM and Chrysler use their own proprietary upgrade systems. They make a huge profit on selling them and indeed, some preimium system are not bad for the average listener. But if you really want a quality set of matching products, getout of OEM and into Aftermarket lines like Alpine, Pioneer, Clarion etc. The internal amps and speakers used i Bose and Infinity syetems are very unconventional in the way the HU is interfaced with internal/external amps and speakers. Adding a nice sub system to these systems is very challenging unless you get the straight poop on how to do so. Ttocs has the most experience in that game and can lead you to a better system interconnects while others here can help you design and install a quality Aftermarket system to include subs later.
