Amp and Sub installation help???

Hey guys, I'm new here! I am having a problem getting my 10" sub to work. I have a basic setup, and just wanted a little bass to round out my stereo. I have a JVC KD-S5050 CD reciever, and a Pioneer GM-3000T amp. I also have one Pioneer 10" sub.

I have installed stuff in the past with little problems, but I am seriously stumped on this one. The radio is hooked up and working. The amp is hooked up with the power light on. I have RCA plugs running from the radio to the amp, but no sound??? The speaker is not blown because I have tested it numerous times. I have tested 2 sets of RCA plugs and even another CD player.

Would anyone have any idea what is going on??? This has been very frustrating and time consuming with zero results.

Any help would be appreciated!

Brent

first off, are you sure your HU works properly, if the RCA circuits are fried, you wont get any sound to your subs. and your sure its wired right? im not entirely sure what to suggest here, so this one would probably be better to ask one of the "experts" like swez or ttocs.

The JVC Cd player is brand new and I have also tried my old CD player to no avail. It is the same wiring (except new RCA's) that I have used for the last 8 years with no problem. Power is on on the amp, but no sound coming from the sub!!!!!

Thanks for the reply

Test the amp inputs with a walkman as the input source. You'll need a patch cord that converts headphone outputs to RCA males.

Set you amp gains to midpoint, LPF to ~80 Hz and see if you get bass from this arrangement. If yes, your HU to amp signals have to be checked for output.

If no sound at all still, then the amp, power wiring, ground and sub connections all need to be re-checked. How did you ground the amp? Also, how is the sub wired to this amp? Assume you have bridged the amp for max power output of ~150 watts RMS @ 4 ohms. (Bridge mode info is in your install guide)

Do you have a good REMote connection from the HU to amp?

PS HU should be well grounded to the floor pan or fire wall. Not wiring harness ground for Aftermarket HU's.

Thanks for the response! I will give it a try with the walkman and see what happens. I do not have the best wiring in the world. I have the amp grounded to a screw in the trunk of my car. My power wire could be a bit thin, and also my speaker wires are thin. Could this make it not work at all?? I have it bridged properly (right neg, Left pos) as stated in the manual. The speaker works because I have tested it on my house stereo.

I have my HU grounded to the ground wire that was used for the original stock radio.

Thanks

Brent

Yep, ground the HU properly to car floor pan or firewall.

Your power feed line on this amp does not have to be large. A #10 wire is plenty, fused at 20-30A. Make sure the fuse is very close to the BAT terminal. (under 2 feet) Protects the electrical system is amp or wire shorts out.

As for grounding amp and HU, prep the site so you have bare metal. A #10 x 3/4" self-tapping sheet metal screw will do a fine job on eyelite type crimp connectors. HU ground is already there, but lengthen it (crimp connector) and screw to floor pan. (#12 wire is good) Amp ground should be same gage as power wire. Can use the same technique for grounding here too.

NOTE: REMote is one of the blue wires in the HU harness. It turns on the amp when the HU is switched on. Make sure you use the correct one. Some HU's have 2 blue feeds... 1 is power antenna and other is REM. If you get it wrong, the amp will not turn on in CD mode.

Finally, #12 speaker wire is fine for your sub wiring to amp. The bridging method you mentioned is correct.

Good luck Brent,
Swez

Thanks so much!! I will do some of the trouble shooting that you suggested, and get it right!

OK, keep us posted on your progress... hope it works out well for you. If we need to dig deeper, so be it.
