Does a "Power Acoustic" 1600W amp which has a RMS rating of 800W at 2 ohms EQUAL a "Audiobahn" 800W RMS amp or an Alpine 800W RMS etc... I see these MONSTER amps on ebay (Boss, PowerAcoustic, Wolfenhag, Lanzar, Pyramid etc...) which CLAIM outragous wattage (peak...yeah - right)... BUT ... They have RMS ratings that are still good for their $$$ eg... "Rockwood" 1600W amp (800W RMS) = 41.00 even the THD is only .05% and a "SoundStream" Van-Gough (800W RMS) = 310.00 _______________________________________________ Can anyone tell me WHY I would want to pay 260 more for the SoundStream? Replies (3) swez on 08/5/2004 20:29:52 Simon, Quality.... synonomous with that name is something many will pay more for and if you sell it, a SoundStream amp will hold value much better then a V-Hag, Rockwood, Sound Storm or other knock offs. Even though several amps may be rated at the same power output, there are ways to jockey (doctor) the numbers... but not the measurable results. Better amps use more sophisticated circuits, more power output transistors, better quality power suppies and components. (MORE RELIABLE AND BETTER BY DESIGN, ARE THE BOTTOM LINE) Personally, I would pay a bit more for a brand like SS as I understand what I am getting. It's like choosing between 2-3 brands of color TV's. All are 52", one is branded Hitachi, one from Philips and the other is an off brand copy from China. After looking at them and the price tags, if I can afford the Hitachi... that's what I would buy as they are great! There is value added in a major branded product... but it really boils down to performance and how well the consumer understands what he/she is getting. Bahn, Power Acoustik, HiFonics, Orion, JL, JBL and many others are worth more as we get more. The others are there too, but if you demand high quality, high reliability and hold their value, these well known names will deliver it. Swez simon on 08/5/2004 20:42:38 Thanks, Swez... that was a GREAT reply. Your insight has deterred me from wasting my $$$ on another "closet" amp (I already have a few in there & that's what I call them). Actually, I'm quite suprised to see you're still hanging around here :o) I used to frequent this site 2-3 years ago with the likes of "Duane" and "MrBrownstone" ... Good to see Walter has been taking care of his vetrans! Keep up the good work & fighting the good fight :o) Peace swez on 08/5/2004 21:23:48 You bet... yep, still here 4 years now. Glad to help!
