Hi there, do u guys have any experience with the JL 12" W6V2 Subwoofer? My friend and i had build the JL Recommended enclosure for it , which is 1.25 cft : 18"x14"x12.75. powered by an Audiobank Model F29 ,2 channel rated at 300rms x 2 The problem is, it sounds below expectation. The excursion is so bad at a certain bass note.and it goes really bad if i turned up the bass boost.. well, in my view, the amp. power is there but the sound is not.. should i build another smaller enclosure about 1.0 cft or go with the Recommended Ported enclosure? or is the power enough to push it? PS. This is my 1st experience using a Higher JL series sub and it is really stressing! Replies (7) swez on 07/30/2004 20:44:32 May have to cut down on the box size a bit, maybe 1.0 cf here. That amp is pretty strong as well as this sub is rated for 400 RMS and can probably handle almost 600 watts in a smaller sealed enclosure. THIS LARGE A BOX (1.25 cf) IS GREAT FOR DEEP BASS... but not good for max power... over excursion issues. Can use the same box, but need to add some mass inside the box, if you don't wish to cut it down. If the front panel is removable, can recess it about 2" (50 mm) so "D" would be 10.75". That would shoot you into a 1.0 cf range. What say you Mr. Z.? Swez zInal3 on 07/30/2004 22:38:49 Hello Mr.Swez , long time no chat Yes, the 1.0 cf, just finished making it just now. the D is so short ! LOL . Result; the bump is not that hard but it is LOUD,is the W6v2 meant to have soft bass? i've seen the audiobahn alumn ones and they hit pretty hard than the W6V2. so much for the expensive sub.. Anyway, i wonder how the W6V2 sounds like in a ported enclosure, JL claimed that it will add +3db All i want is to get the maximum performance for my JL sub and i'm feeling a bit of regret buying it. SO much for its marketing ads Any other way to increase the performance Mr.Swez ? uochronos on 07/30/2004 23:05:10 comparing audiobahn and JL is like comparing apples and turkeys.... literaly no comparison Audiobahn is pure SPL sub applications they are ment to be boomy and extrmly loud. JL is much more a SQ sub. they put out there fair share of SPL but they are meant to be SQ with good SPL balance. honestly i find JL to be louder then most audiobahn subs in right box... honestly i heard a pair of 12W6v2 in a suv and they where louder then i would have wanted all the time. i tried to look up that amp and could not find specs for it unfortunatly. but if it is putting out 600watts to this sub i strongly suggest against going ported that well lower the subs power handling and you may risk damage to it. email JL and tell them what size car abnd what power amp and they may send you specs for a box to match your application i know alot of companies well do this. swez on 07/31/2004 08:18:27 Agreed... if you go ported, a +3dB boost at PTF is about right. But w/o adequate backpressure on the sub, this cone can get pretty sloppy (out of control) at high power. Yes, the voice coils can take 600 watts RMS, but X-Max will be reached long before you get that much power to the sub. Depends on enclosure size and and port freq. Bahn is mostly an SPL sub. JL is more SQ and good SPL. The ALUM Q series from Bahn is the closest sub they offer for SQL applications. As for getting more deep bass out of your present JL woofer... have pretty much maxed out your options with a single 12. How do you have this sub wired to that 2 channel amp now? Swez zInal3 on 07/31/2004 14:41:07 Thanks for the advice Uochoronos and Mr.Swez , i nearly forgot about the diff. between SPL and SQL due to the majority of guys in my neighbourhood favoring SPL rather than SQL . It really changes my mindset that Bigger Bump is better after a while.. My mistake actually , i forgot about the setting in my Alpine HU: the HPF was 120 hz , Now is Flat. No wonder it sounds doubtful LOL! I figured it out just now . My Mistake At the moment, the sub is bridged to the 2 channel amp which is giving about roughly 600rms , it sounds much better and very LOUD for a single 12" sub yet softer and accurate than my previous subs. Yes , i will not go ported for my sub as it is too risky. Damaging the sub will result loss of sleep due to worry and regret LOL! Thanks for the Advice ! Really appreciate it ! SMILE swez on 07/31/2004 17:47:39 Hummm, JL does make a fine sub and SQ is their primary goal. But they can get loud too with enough power and adequate enclosure space. Seems like no problems on the power or enclosure sides of the equation. Your HU filters... for the sub, the LPF should be set between 80-100 Hz for the sub amp input. If you have other amps for the mid/highs, then using the HPF to block lows is appropriate. Same settings on HPF too... 80-100 Hz. This nets a very good blending cross point between sub and mid/highs. Swez zInal3 on 08/3/2004 07:04:35 Thanks for the advice (= My Alpine HU only have HPF and no LPF.. but i think i used to have the LPF option in my HU.. thanks again for the help Mr. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
