Underpowered??

Hey guys...first time poster here. First off, the site rocks and its great to find a place with people that know their stuff helping people like me who only kinda know their stuff. Ok so here's my question. I'm running an Infiniti sub (not sure exactly what model..bought it off a friend...he said it has about a 1000 watt max) and a 350 Watt kenwood amp. All backed by a Sony HU. When I turn it up sometimes the sub begins to distort. I don't really know how else to describe it...it has like a gross edge to the bass. Is my system not tuned right?? Or am I just turning it up too much for the amp to handle. Anything you guys could suggest would be great. Oh and if anyone else out there has gotten their **** jacked recently...I feel for you. My car has gotten broken into twice in the last year. Bastards. Thanks again!

sounds like its 80% likly that this is a clipping issue. if this sub is 1000watts max then usualy thats 400-500rms which is the impoortant number here. we reaqlly need to know what model sub this is to help you properly though and what model amp... the amp should be right on it somewhere. and the sub model probaly is stamped on the magnet or somewhere on that general area.

now assume though that the sub and amp are hooked up properly which untill we have model numbers we cant know for sure. then this is a clipping issue. if you have a 500rms sub and are giving this sub only 350rms and its making the sound you discribed you have the gain too far up. your head units RCA outs have a specific voltage that they give you amp the amps gain has to be set to the same or higher then that or you risk clipping which can cuase you to kill the sub eventualy.

ok to make sure your all hooked up right and get this fixed we need 3 crucial pieces of info

1: head unit model
2: amp model
3: and sub model

with this info we can get you all set up and sounding right

PS
welcome to the site and we hope to see you here alot more often we try are best to get everyone directed in the right directions.

Here's an FAQ that shows how to dial in your HU and amp for best sound.

Welcome to our site! Pull up a chair, put on your THINK -ing cap and absorb all you can. We're here to help at many levels of car audio.

Also, we do run a PG rating on this site. Please respect that as we can all communicate well enough w/o the "colorful language" that other sites seem to thrive on.

PS When writing long, detailed postings, try to break them up into paragraphs by topic. So much easier to figure out what the issues are and address them in a logical order. I know... it's like school, but more like developing good technical writing skills. This will help you now and later in life as well.

I'll try and get model numbers soon....although I did a little bass test tonight and everything seemed to be working better. Maybe it was my imagination or just some weird planetary alignment or something. We'll see.

And sorry about the language...force of habit. We'll keep it PG from here on out. Thanks for the help already guys!!

Try the steps in the FAQ mentioned and go easy on any bass boost features you may have on the amp or HU. Also, some music has very moderate bass track energy. Rap and a few other types of music have very heavy bass tracks. These can send your sub into a tizzy if you don't adjust the bass control knob back a few dB.
