i was just offered a freinds orion XTR3 10" subs for $40 a peice. right now i have a clarion apx400.2 amp that puts out about 150 watts per channel into a 4 ohm load. i haven't worked with 2 or 8 ohm yet so i don't know a whole lot about them. would they work with this amplifier. also the subs are dual voice coil with a 500 watt power handling. i would really really appreciate and answer within a half hour. all i need for now is if they will work and if you think i should buy them. thanks

oh yes i also has small enclose .75 cubic feet will this be alrite for these subs too. also they say that they can be both 2 and 8 ohm. i'm not sure what that means and what i'll have to do to make my amp to make it put out at 2 ohm which would optimize my power output right?

anyone know anything about this sub, or if this setup will work

The subs are too powerful for the amplifier... you would need at least 1000w of power at 2 ohms bridged.

That $40 per sub will turn into another $400 price for an amplifier, possibly even more.

500 watts is not the rms power it is the max power handling. the rms power is only like 200 watts. can't you get more power out of your amp if the sub is 2 ohms? i checked out the specs on my amp and it is rated at 190 watts in to 2 2 ohm channels. i would be underpowering them slightly but i have another 200 watt amp i am not using right now that i could wire in if you still think i don't have enough power. there should be minimal clipping if any because i never listen to my music at full tilt for very long periods of time and not very often so it shouldn't damage the subs or amp would it? this is just what i was thinking so you can tell me if i am way to far off or whatever.

Easy deal here... wire each sub for 2 ohms. (both coils per sub in parallel) Then, wire 1 sub per channel. This will give you max power from the amp, to your subs.

Also, most 10's will do well in .75 cf/chamber sealed. You may want to check their website on these subs to confirm optimal cf for these subs.

I thought 500w was the RMS, sorry.

thats no problem at all. by what you think they sound like they mitght do alrite so i think i'll go buy them. i may need a little bit of help when i am wiring them though because i have never owned a dual voice coil sub. also i have never really heard a whole lot about orion car audio is it any good?

The XTR's are an older model, but in most cases, Orion makes a very quality product. Which voice coil version are these? Assume a 4+4 type, but you tell us? If so, each sub can be wired 2 or 8 ohms each.

When wiring a pair to an amp, have to know what the amp can handle. If a mono amp, you have 2 choices... 1 ohm load or a 4 ohm load.

We'll get ya home as I noted you have a 2 channel amp mentioned above. With a 2 channel, can wire each sub for 2 ohms and run 1 sub per channel. Easy deal!
