i went to a car stereo place, a small little building, and the guy said that JL audio is the best you can get. Is this true? I mean the guy had all kinds of trophy's sitting around for contests he had won using JL audio, so I didn't know what to believe. Replies (12) DJ_LUCKY on 07/23/2004 09:55:08 also he said alpine is right below JL, and that you should only run alpine speakers with an alpine radio, he said other radio's don't pick up a certain mid range, so it sounds kind of staticky if you listen closely. compvr15s on 07/23/2004 12:49:07 of the known brands yea id say he is right, jl is the best. their prices are steep though, you can find gear of the same quality for much less if your just willing to take a step into the unknown. i myself am not familiar with many of these brands but you hear about it alot. like jl w7 subwoffer (600-900 dollars) can get an adire audio brahma for under 500 dollars that will deliver better bass response and sound quality. as for alpine they are a great head unit maker but it seems that the rest of thier product lines are lacking now a days. what type of system are you looking for. we can assist you on different gear other than jl, and if not you can always go with jl they make great products i just feel they charge too much for it. good luck, im sure many will comment on this post. good luck ttocs on 07/23/2004 13:05:53 I have been loving JL since the new shop started carrying them. They have not let us down yet..... Bigeazy4387 on 07/23/2004 15:38:52 lets just say this i heard 1 jl w7 in a sealed box with only 500watts on it in a reg cab truck and it was louder than and sounded better than any sub ive heard yet plus jl's subs have been known to last a while uochronos on 07/23/2004 15:49:37 i have confidence in JL they put out great bass and SQ, they are well researched far beyond most subs and they are known to last a long time. they are steep in price but i have never heard a JL sub and thought wow thats all? usualy i'm quite impressed. Elemental designs, adire, and a few others all deliver products that are similar or better in many ways. many of them have better warranties as well. also i would hardly rate alpine as being right under JL alpine makes some fine gear there type R and type S subs and components are great for mid ranged priced gear and sound nice as well. as far as only running alpine with alpine decks that is very much a choice from an individual person i have always liked Pioneer premier decks and i dont see how a deck would miss some midrange.... that does not make since to me its almost like the guys implying that the signal is just nmot sent which makes no sense... almsot everyone is going to have an opinion and remember a shop is there to make money and JL is the most expensive. the guys at my local car toys all loved phoenix gold and said it was the best of the best which i do agree in many aspects so i bought a PG amp. then they stoped carrying PG amps and brought in a ton of JL amps now they swear PG sucks and JL is like way better... its strange because JL amps where out and even being carried there when i bought the PG amp but they swore then that it was better then they dont carry it and its a pile of crap i need to get rid of. anytime i go there now adays(2 years later) i tell them to leave me alone and just let me shop and they elarned to do that because i well walk out if they start slinging crap my way. and since i'm in there alot they just leave me alone anymore. my only suggestion to you is that listen to what everyone has to say and then decide for your self. even if what someone tells you is wrong you can learn almost as much from it as someone telling you factual awnsers. well i haev babbled on long enough:) swez on 07/23/2004 19:51:42 Chronos... U R Funny! Yes, I don't think many would argue that JL Audio does not make some of the finest car audio gear around... they do! Are there other products out there that do a good job... sure! Can we justify the price VS performance... if you have that kind of cash to part with, why not JL? Swez DJ_LUCKY on 07/25/2004 01:29:38 thanks for the info everybody, it helps me alot, i'm really glad to see you guys are willing to help. The price is a big deal, i'm not gonna spend too much, I mean, all I want is a simple sound system that will thump, nothing extroadinary, just a set up that's not pricey, and when I'm driving it will be heard. Can anyone, by chance, think of a set up that would fit that need? swez on 07/25/2004 05:32:42 There are many good products out there to choose from. What do you want in this truck both now and later? Experience tells us to prompt you to establish a budget and some longer term goals. Then fill in the holes as you have the time and cash to do so. For now, best place to start is your sub(s) and amp section. How much space do you have for mounting subs behind the seats of your truck? In some trucks, a single sub will do a very good job with the proper enclosure and adequate amping. Also, do you have the factory Radio in now or an aftermarket type HU? Swez DJ_LUCKY on 07/25/2004 11:04:28 well I figured that I would just get each thing one by one or something. It's extended cab, I'd have to measure, and I have the factory radio. swez on 07/25/2004 14:01:51 Extended Cab is a lot easier to fit a decent sub enclosure into. Especially if one seat flips up/down for stowage. Just take some height, width and depth measurements and get back to us on the gross space you wish to allocate toward the sub box. FYI: Be aware that larger sub systems can consume a lot of power. Your electrical system can support 30-50 amperes of add on devices in most cases. However, in smaller vehicles with very modest ALT's, (75A. or less) That margine gets a bit smaller too. That means ALT & BAT upgrades if a large amp and small stock ALT. Swez DJ_LUCKY on 07/25/2004 14:25:18 The guy in that shop said that subs are pushing air, and that most people think well, I'll just put the biggest sub or subs in here that I can, and he said that's not good, because your not getting full potential or something, I can't quite remember exactly what he said, but that was basically it. He said 10's would prolly be perfect for it, possibly 12's but yea, I'll get back to u on the measurements. swez on 07/25/2004 20:16:32 If you can stay under 600 watts RMS for your subs & amp, you might get by with stock ALT and maybe a BAT upgrade. As for 10's or 12's... either will work well when sized to your intended location is key. Heck, even some potent 8's can do a real fine job as well if you really need a compact enclosure. Yes, the guy was right about subs moving air. The more air they move, the more boom we get. The linear throw (excursion ability) is important as the further in and out the cone can move, the more air it will push. Many sub makers have caught on to that scenario and now 12-18mm of cone movement (1 way excursion) are not uncommon in high performance subs. It's not just cone area that matters, but stroke matters too... just like the pistons in a car...."There is no replacement for displacement". Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
