i just purchased a 94 gmc sonoma and wanted to get going on the stereo aspect of this little truck. for now i think that i am just gonna replace the stock radio with an older deck that i have had in my possesion for a while but plan on replacing. my primary question for you guys is how to get the radio out of the truck without damaging the temperature controls which are right next to it. my second qusetion would be how to mount the deck into the dash when there would be a more than large enough hole in my dash. any help would be greatly appreciated

Seeing that your head unit has no holes for the din tools, I'm assuming you'll have to remove part of the dash.

Then you'll need one of these, and wiring harnesses to install your [new] headunit.

is there any place i could purchase this in a smaller city, there are a few places that do custom installs but i don't know if they would sell me something that would actually make them lose money, but i am not sure so i could probably check up on it later this week. just in case there isn't is there any trusable place on the net that sells them for a decent price. also i am a canadian so i wouldn't mind finding a place closer to home so that i won't be paying crazy shipping fees.

I don't where you'd buy the products in Canada... but I'd check the local shops out first.

Could someone help him out? Which part are you from?

your going ot need the standard GM harness -- coming out of your stock radio should either be one plug, with it almost looks like 4 plugs connected to it, or they will each be individual - i think there are 2 whites, one blue, and one black... the GM harness has places for all of these plugs to plug into. You may also need an antenna adapter - part number American International GM-6 .. and honestly i forgot the model numbers for the dash kit and the wiring harness.. [not sure if.. ] best buy or circuit city are up there? they carry all that stuff that you will need....

there isn't a best buy or a circuit city but i do have a future shop and a visions which are fairly similar i think. the thing that i still don't really understand is the wiring harness i might sound really stupid or whatever but the deck that i have from my old truck has a harness with all the speaker outputs and everything so what i don't understand is why i would need to switch out the wiring harness. couldn't i just cut and splice the speaker lines to the deck?

Stock wiring harnesses are usually stock radio specific, meaning they wont connect with an aftermarket (third party) radio... quite simply, theres a 50% chance it won't work. If it doesn't, then you'll have to go buy the harness. FROWN

There isn't much choice with the dash kit, unless you want the head unit to hang out with all of the wires showing... there are ways to custom make one, but not for under $50.

all questions are welcomed.

What kind of radio do you have?

You can go in and cut the hrns that is inside your truck and splice in. However it is easier if you go buy the hrns that we are talking about. This hrns ($15)will allow you to integrate into the factory wiring without having to cut anything. The color code on this hrns is the same as the standard color code that 90% of aftermarket decks use. To connect into the factory wiring you would simply connect red to red, yellow to yellow, ect. The factory code is not the same. You can do the wiring in the house and plug it right in...

Now there are some things you need to be carefull of when removing the dash. The little red hazard switch on the top of the steering colum breaks easily, and costs about $300 to fix......... Sometimes you can get the dashoff easy, sometimes you can't. If your dash is brittle it is better to drop the steering colum to avoid flexing it. Don't force it.
