Hello all

I picked up my 2004.5 Volvo S40 T5 last month. Next up, a system. Let me state this now by saying I'm still never new at this car audio stuff. I'm a computer guy. :) So sorry if I'm asking some stupid questions...

In reading these forms, as well as others, I am pretty sure I am going to go with two 12" Adire Audio Shivas. People say those subs really hit, and for that price I'm thinking I can't go wrong.

============================================
The Shiva is a 12" dual voice coil subwoofer. It has 16mm of one way Xmax. Stamped frame, paper pulp-based cone, foam surround. Semi-progressive spider. Dual 2" diameter 8 Ohm voice coils. 87 dB efficient. 20 Hz to 1 kHz. Good for sealed boxes from 35 to 100 liters, vented boxes from 85 liters to 150 liters, and infinite baffle. Fs 21 Hz, Qms 5.5, Qes 0.42, Qts 0.39, Re 5.5 Ohms per voice coil, Vas 155L, Sd 481 cm2, 650W RMS. MSRP $125 each.
=============================================

-My question is what would be the best amp for two of these subwoofers? I don't care much about price, I just want nice sound.
-I listen to a lot of techno, house, r&b, and hip-hop. What would be the best box?
-I really like the head unit in my car, but I am not sure if my HU has a subwoofer plug in the back. (Forgot the name) If not, would I still be able to get nice bass?

Thank you for your time.

Jayson

Shiva is a very well priced SQL sub and in a 1.0 - 1.25 cf enclosure (per sub) sealed, they will deliver clean deep bass as well as quick, crisp bass lines.

As for amps, a Class D mono amp that is stable at 2 ohms will do a fine job here. The power range of 300 - 800 watts RMS is plenty for these subs. The coils are rated higher (650 RMS/sub..) but you'll hit maximum excursion well before that with this sub. (somewhere near 400 RMS, Xmax is reached)

Also, these are 8+8 ohm dual coil subs. Wire each sub in parallel for 4 ohms per sub, then parallel both subs to amp = 2 ohms.

Amps: JBL, Kicker, JL, Rockford, Memphis, MA Audio and a long list more. Pick your price range and power needs... then we can narrow the field to 2 or 3.

FYI: Consider your bass needs carefully as you consider your purchases. The larger the amp, the more power they consume. Your car electricals can handle only so much add on items before the electrical system goes unstable on you. If you don't know already, find out what amperage rating your alternator is and look at the battery too. It is probably ~500 - 600 CCA rated. With the ALT power rating, can help you determine what power level to use in amping before electrical issues become a problem.

Projected SPL output VS amping power and current draw

1. 300 watts RMS nets low 130's dB and will draw ~25A
2. 600 RMS will give you mid 130's dB, draw is ~50A
3. 800 RMS will give you almost 140 dB, draw is ~70A

OK, hope this gets you on track. Welcome to CK and we are newbie friendly. No such thing as a dumb question. The site is PG rated, so we keep it clean and user friendly. We try hard... not to bash product lines or people here. Thanks for minding the basic guidelines.

DOS = Dumb Operating Systems

Yes, I remember some of the old dos commands, but have forgotten more than I recall... am stuck in limbo to reboot. Can boot off A: drive disk and get to BIOS structure.. but the rest... all greek to me

Tried the old: A>cd\C: NG
Also tried A> format C: NG
Probably a F-key here that will get me back to the root directory, but then what?

hmm I had to do this to my laptop, usually when you get to the command and you have the right windows xp disk it should boot right up and xp should format it or reinstall it might call it, thats the kind i have, but mine isn't too legal of a disk, if you know what i mean lol, but it works great

swez on 07/16/2004 16:55:09
I have a legal disk and a backup copy. Neither work the way you mentioned as I have tried this.

I THINK this is a problem b/c the guy who did the conversion (for me) tried to add XP to a system already running Win 98 SE that went unstable on me during a dial up modem to cable conversion install.

Would like to just format the main drive, install XP and be done with it. Dunno how just yet and awaiting a computer guru to walk me through the steps. Come soon Guru!

PS System will not work in safe mode either...

Time for me to chime in and ask my favorite question, Do you have an alarm? If so what type??? I don't know where you live, or what the crimerates are but I see way too many stolen systems.....

Well I usually format my computer once a month, you can try this. Go into your bios settings, usually when your computer starts up you can get into it. I have to hit Delete to get into it, may be different for different motherboards. Don't change any other setting but go into your booting section, enable one section to boot from CD-ROM. Restart your computer with the XP CD in there and it should run, follow the steps and away you go. If you have any questions please shoot, you helped me so much in the past.

Thanks Thunder... will be doing some of this on Saturday... will advise my progress...

PS Apostosynthi gave me similar inputs and additional details on the how to... we'll see how how it goes.
