Hi dont know if this is the right place but i need help with an alternator replacement for a 1999 ford contour.I have an alpine cda-9805 head unit (2) 12 inch kicker comps and a profile 600sx amp just wondering if I need to upgrade my stock alternator if so how do I figure out what size to upgrade to? Replies (3) Swez on 05/30/2003 10:10:00 Hello Bapper, This amp pulls ~40-50A of current as you reach full output. If this amp is all you plan to use in your Contour, a stock Alt and larger CCA rated battery (750 CCA or more) should be OK. But if you think you are going to use a larger amp system later, plan ahead and get a larger output ALT. The minimum usable ALT rating I would recommend, would be ~85A. If you can get something higher to fit, by all means... consider that option. Many GM and Ford ALT's come in a variety of output ratings, based on the components used inside the ALT. Many are the same Form & Fit, just higher output. A quick call to a good autoparts store will tell you what your options are. Just take your original ALT out, go to the store and compare the mountings and electrical connection locations etc. If all is same, good to go and no "core charges" as you have the old one with you already! FYI: Rebuilt ALT's are much cheaper than new and usually come with life time replacement warranty. So, can save yourself a lot of cash if using a rebuilt unit VS new or dealership purchases. Swez ttocs on 05/30/2003 10:41:20 I agree, you should be fine for now as long as everything is installed and tumed correctly. Are you having some ussues that lead you to believe the alt is the problem? bapper on 05/30/2003 18:10:29 Thanks for the help.No i'm not having any problems at the moment but i wanted to know for future reference.
