problems with new stereo in my mini

Hi,

I'm trying to wire up a kenwood mini disc head unit to some JBL 6 x 9's and some alpine SP1005 tweeters (or something like that) and all was going well. i got the speakers wired up correctly and was just moving onto the power. The only trouble is my mini does't have a stereo in it and never has.

I got one o those little male stereo plug things that plugs into the plug on the back of the head unit, so theoretically, i just need to connect the wires to this to the correct ones on my car. Do i need 12v memory and 12v ignition connected for it to work? cos im not bothered about it turning itself off, i can do that.

could someone just tell me the minimum tht needs wiring up for the thing to work cos im driving myself up the wall!

cheers

yes, you need constant and switched. to get that bad boy to fire up, you have to have a 12v memory and 12v ignition and a ground. it won't work if you don't have all 3.

is there are not both 12v wires present, you will have to tap into an existing source, i always tap into the ignition harness. i am not sure on the colors that you will have to tap into for memory (a.k.a. constant) and ignition (a.k.a. switched).

you will have to get a multimeter or something to measure for an existing wire that is constantly 12 volts, and a wire that is only 12 volts when the ignition is turned on. tap into these with some 18 gauge wire or so and run that to where the radio goes, and run a ground wire from the firewall, and you will be good to go.

take it easy,

Hey mate... ya came to the right barby Q...

Your minimum power connections are:

1. Red wire to ACC/IGN in fuse panel
(HU will turn on/off with key in ACC/IGN positions)

2. Black is to body ground (bare metal here)

3. Yellow wire is MEM/CONstant to retain radio stations and clock features etc.

4. There are also 4 pairs of speaker lines (FR,FL, RR & LR)

ALTERNATE: You can combine Red and Yellow directly to Pos termination on battery. Just make sure these are both fused appropriately if you go this route. This will give you radio ON at all times and you can turn on/shut off manually any anytime.

Hope that helps,
Swez

PS It would be very good to have a 12 volt test light (minimal) or better still, a volt/ohm meter to probe electrical wires to make sure you have power to the appropriate lines on your mini disc player.
