Ok, I wired everything... but it doesn't work. Theres no problem with the speaker connections, it's basically the battery connection, ignition and ground that are my problem - I'm wiring it to factory wires, so I don't know if anything is colour coded. Also, when I was snipping the wires which were on the quick connects, the car beeped at me... onto the colours. Black (ground) is to the black wire. Yellow (battery) is to the yellow striped wire. Red (ignition) has an option of either going to a green striped wire, or a black wire. I can provide pictures if needed. Replies (21) racerbizoehm on 06/25/2004 18:59:44 usually you need a aftermarket wire harness plug- in because those wires have all kinds of colors, what do you mean beeped? another tip is to disconnect battery, so you dont touch anything together, I learned that! you can also you a test light to check if you power at the right times like yellow has power all the time red when you turn switch on etc, good luck aposynthesi on 06/25/2004 20:19:29 You know the sound you get when your keys are in your ignition before you close your door... or something. I'll try the other stuff. aposynthesi on 06/25/2004 20:36:54 Could a fuse be blown? ttocs on 06/25/2004 21:19:21 you need a voltmeter or test light to check these wires. Ford and mercury likes to use red as ground but it would still be a good idea to ground the deck to the chassis. What is the deck not doing? Do you know if it worked prior to installation? Was there a working radio in the car? There is also a good chance that car has a primium sound system that would require some additional wiring. aposynthesi on 06/25/2004 21:26:03 Well, other things are going wrong as well... Power locks, auto lights, interior lights, clock... I had a nice head unit in there before, but I think since I clipped all of the wires simultaneously that most likely screwed everything up. ttocs on 06/26/2004 10:05:36 yes, you only want to clip one wire at a time. The interior lights and clock are going to be a blown fuse as they are normally tied in on the same circuit as the +12v constant to the deck. Check ALL fuses in the cabin as well as any that are under the hood. After that you will need to dig out the voltmeter/testlight and check your wires. Any time I am switching out decks and do not have a aftermarket hrns I normally clip one wire at a time, leaving a small amount of the connected wire still attached. Then when you want to wire your deck you can simply cut off that remaining piece, and then splice in the new wire with the proper color. This is assuming that the deck that was in there was working properly. racerbizoehm on 06/26/2004 11:50:05 I had a problem with the truck, and I was dum enough to not disconnect battery and one of the power wires touched and got soem sparks going and then the wires didnt have no power after that so blown fuses our nothing, so what i did what ran 2 wires from fuse box for it then, cuz must of fried something, not any fuses aposynthesi on 06/26/2004 12:30:41 Ok, I replaced the fuse, and it blew right after I replaced it. Stupid beaner fuse. aposynthesi on 06/26/2004 14:59:29 Neighbors are cool. They fix problems... and drink beer at 11:00am. Thanks everyone who helped. racerbizoehm on 06/26/2004 17:47:39 it never too early to start drinkin lol aposynthesi on 06/26/2004 19:39:59 Only on weekdays, when you have to go to work... can't do that. People who are drunk at work kind of make me mad. ttocs on 06/27/2004 10:58:34 its noon somewhere........... If you put the fuse in and it blew again, you still have a short somewhere. Isulate or disconnect all wires or a make sure they are not touching any metal then replace the fuse. aposynthesi on 06/27/2004 11:19:22 It's fixed... thanks though. GRIN swez on 06/29/2004 09:13:40 Did you learn anything on this install Apo? Drinking beer before noon ??? That sounds like a vacation kind of thing. BTW, hardcore alcoholics can rationalize most any time to drink. Uhmmmm, let's see... it's 11:00 AM in New Jersey or New York, that's 11:00 PM in Japan! See what I mean? Glad you got the problems resolved. Swez aposynthesi on 06/29/2004 10:28:49 Yeah, I learned that Ford can't colour code for crap. Who makes the ground wire like 20 gauge? The power wire was green with a red stripe, and the switched current was blue! Man. I think that whenever I get the chance, I'm gonna buy some Hooker 1/0's and replace the power, because that was 20 gauge too. aposynthesi on 06/29/2004 10:54:33 Oh yeah, where would I get a Voltmeter or a test light? I think having either of those would be pretty handy. swez on 06/29/2004 18:39:18 WalMart has them both for under $25.00 for the pair. I bought a small one (meter) while in FL and it was like $18.00. Easy to read, decent sized LCD display and palm size. Look in the electrical supply section for meter and Automotive for the test light. Swez cplkittle on 07/3/2004 08:39:07 just remember, never test a wire that is wrapped in a yellow loom. the newB installer here got a bloody nose the other day trying to find power in the airbag wires. I laughed my butt off. aposynthesi on 07/16/2004 19:09:10 I went out and bought the Multi-meter and the test light... I used the multi-meter on the speaker wires, and every one of them had a drastically different number... Is it supposed to be like that? Also - I'm getting new wires at the same time that I get my speaker amp, and I don't know where to hook up the switched current / ignition wire... where does it usually go, to the ignition (duh)? Would I have to get new battery terminal to be able to run the amp to it, or is there another way? Bigeazy4387 on 07/16/2004 21:51:21 >"Also - I'm getting new wires at the same time that I get my speaker amp, and I don't know where to hook up the switched current / ignition wire... where does it usually go, to the ignition (duh)?"< it hooks on to a switched power supply[a power lead that turns off when you turn the ignition off] run the wire behind your headunit and take your test light and find a wire[not a speaker wire]that turns on with the igniton on and off with the igniton off hopefully this will help aposynthesi on 07/17/2004 00:08:08 Which wire is supposed to keep power to the head unit and save data, because mine doesn't.
