I cant use the CDT CL61a subwoofer, but I want to use the tweeters

The CDT subwoofer is way to big to fit in my front doors. I guess I should of looked up the specs for my vehicle. Anyways, I was wondering what the RMS is for the tweet's?.. The components are rated at 90RMS, but is that for the subwoofer and the tweets together? I have a PPI PC2300 amp and at 4ohm it puts out 75RMS. Please help.

i would not suggest hooking 75watts rms only to the tweeter this would not be the best thing.. how large is the hole in your door? if its a 5 1/4 hole you could create a baffle a sort of mounting bracket thats 3/4 inch out and mount it in the hole still... or you could get kick panels to mount your speaker in...

Where can I get some kick panels for cheap? I was thinking of sending the components back and just get some competition tweets that are 75 watts RMS. What do you think? And the comp tweets are cheaper than the components. I was looking at Kicker and Mb Quart.

the tweters wont sound as good you well have 100% just high end no middle sounds. you can get kick panels at cructhfield for almost any vehicle of course from crutchfield its a bit expensive but at least then you can see what they are and then look for them cheaper elsewhere on the net. also swez might know a place with them cheaper he seems to be able to find just about anything:) i also well look around and see what i can find.

Well, the main thing here... you have a fine set of Comps at hand. As mentioned before, there are often ways to install larger MB drivers in the doors with some modifications. An oversized trim ring or panel will often work if you are cleaver and creative about the install.

The other option is usually even better... kick panels tend to have an advantage as they act as an enclosure and the tweeter is aimed upward toward the driver/passengers' head. Better high frequency dispersion this way.

The crossovers on the CDT Comps are the key to better than average SQ performance. The MB or tweeter on its' own would not be nearly so elegant in sound. A very well matched system in all, for a very reasonable price.

BTW, many tweeters only need 25-30 watts RMS of power to sound very loud. Depends on the design and efficiencies of the tweeter. You can easily find tweeters that take more power, but if they are say 94dB @1w/1m. It will not take much power to get high SPL numbers from a small amp.

The numbers:

1 watt 94dB of SPL
2 watts 97dB
4 watts 100dB
8 watts 103dB
16 watts 106db
32 watts 109dB **
64 watts 112dB ***

** is enough SPL to cut through most high SPL systems
*** enough SPL to make your ears hurt in a few minutes of listening

Let's go on a kick panel hunt and trim rings to fit your car.

The Maxima shows 4"x 6" drivers in front, 6.75" drivers in rear deck. The Cl -61a's will fit in rear deck with few modifications. The 4x6's in front are going to be a challenge as some major cutting may be needed to fit the Comps in front door location. This car model has an option for Bose OEM systems and non-Bose systems. Do you know which one you have now? Bose usually has an amplifier built right onto the rear of the speaker. Does yours?

Kick panels are probably your best option here. I don't see a real benefit to installing the CDT's in the rear deck unless you like to ride backwards in the rear seats. GRIN Your pooch may like that... but I doubt you would.

Q-Logic does make a kick panel for Maxima 2000-02 models. The MB cutout diameter is 6-1/8" max. It will also take up to 2" tweeters as well.

You may wish to contact them to ensure they have a model that will fit your 1990 model.

Hummm, this will not be an easy find. May have to look into custom made fiberglass Kicks for this vehicle.

Your other choice, is to take the door panel off and see how much room there is available to install the CDT's. Have to make some careful measurments before cutting any sheet metal or cross supports. Look for window and door lock mechanicals that may be in the way too.

Where are the 4x6 stock speakers located now? Upper part of the door or way down low? Hogging out a 6" + hole may be possible if there is adequate depth for magnet structure behind that install panel. Can always add trim rings to bring the speaker basket outward for clearance... but this one might be tricky all around. (especially the driver side door)
