I've heard that its better to use a crossover or equalizer w/crossover instead of the amplifiers crossover?.. If this is true what is a good brand of eq/crossover? (audiocontrol, huh)

i just got an audio control eqx and am very impressed... although i got a hell of a deal for only 78$ but i deifnatly think it would be worth the 240$ i was going to spend on it. but its not worth it unless your really into sq and having control. also it takes some time to figure it all out,. how it works that is

Most better amps have good crossovers for bass and mid/highs. A 12dB slope is common for LP crossovers to subs, while 18-24 dB slopes are great for subsonic filtering (ported bass enclosures) and high end Component speaker systems.

A good EQ can open up a whole new venue of sound control over your system. But a well trained ear, hours of experimentation and some good ol common sense will get you there. Audio Control makes some of the best gear in the industry... but not cheap.

What are you hoping to achieve at this point in your install?

I was kind of wandering if I should add a crossover/eq, so I dont have to overstress my amplifier's crossover/eq?. I do want my cabin to sound as crisp and clean as possible and as well as some bone shattering bass. So I guess sq/spl.

well not 100% sure what you mean by over stress the Crossovebr/eq on the amp these are built to work and be part of them amp you arent going to over stress them. however a good after market eq/corssover such as the EQX mentioned well be a better crossover and eq then that on most amps. causeing it to be crisper and more control. but if your only worry is over stressing the current ones this isnt going to happen.

I just heard that it is better to use a regular crossover/eq over the amp crossover. Is It probably better to use the subwoofer level on the eq instead of the sub control on my HU (CQ-HX1083U)?.. So a eq would make my cabin sound crisp and clean at high volumes, too.br

a decent HU goes for around 200$ and a good EQ such as the EQX goes for 200-350$ right there it shows you that a add on eq has better components and must make a large differnce or they wouldnt sell many.

the hard thing is getting to know how to use it. you can make it sound worse as easily as better since you have so much control.

it is not really better to use an external corssover for your sub amp as far as i know my phoenix gold amp and avionix amp both have very nice crossovers on them. a crossover or eq or combo just give you that much mroe control you can tone down any hot spots or boost any weak spots your system has and even it out to sounding perfect./

Right you are Chronos! CLAP

Most amps have very good crossvers and are more than adequate at filtering the proper signals to a given speaker or sub. High end HU's often have HP/LP filtering in their menus as well. Don't usually need both however. One or the other will suffice.

EQing is a whole different set of tools and toys. This allows one to shape and blend our sound systems. Take out the peaks, boost the dips and such. Again, better HU's have some EQ features that are either preset to specific listening curves or can customize as needed. The very high end HU's have a calibrated mike, reference tones (pink noise generator) and some kind of RTA to really dial in the sound stages. That's very upscale gear here.

What is the bottom line here on what you wish to accomplish? Knowing that, some additional comments will follow.
