Painting & Welding...

Does anybody know much about painting, or doing welding work on automobiles?

I've been browsing around Home Depot lately and saw spray guns for $70-$80 and welding machines for around $300, but I don't know if they would suffice for something as large as a car.

all i know about painting cars is that it is incredibly difficult. if you don't know how to paint/weld cars, definitely try to get your hands on a junk car to practice on before you do any work on a car that matters. good luck!!

What are you planning to weld? If you are just wanting to do a little body work, mostly dealing with sheet metal to patch rust, than a cheap welder will do just fine. Anything much heavier than that though and dont waste your time. As far as painting goes, its an art, you need to be good to get a great paint job, but than again it isnt all that hard to do an allright looking one. Just make sure everything is very clean and dont cut any corners.

painting isnt that hard to go a decent job with. i suggest a air preasure paint gun system if you seriously want to do this pay more then 70$... a decent set up for painting well cost around 150-200$ for one that runs off an air tank. the part that makes it hard is good paint jobs are done in clean rooms where there is no dust or debris leaving it super smooth and very nice. anything done in a garge or shop is going to have inperfections. rememebr dont go cheap if you want it to look nice. sand the car especialy any bad or rough spots then prime and sand till its smooth remember the metal and primer if the fondation if that isnt good then the rest wont be either. a decent paint job usualy has 3 or 4 paint coats then 3 or 4 clear coat layers. take your tiem and remmeber each coat doesnt have to be thick as they well over lap. its much easier to ad more then it is to take some off. also clean the sprayer often so that it doesnt get chuncks or anything in the paint job.
i would suggest getting a good sized chunk of sheet metal and spend the time to paint that right and see how you think it looks.

If you are seriously considering doing painting yourself then I recommend you buy some of the best filters and painter jumpsuits you can find. My buddy painted cars for about a year before he got really sick. What happened was the paint actually gets absorbed through your skin and when you breathe in the fumes it attacks your lungs. He can no longer use paints anymore due to this. So as a safety tip make sure all skin is covered and you have a high quality mask to filter out the paint fumes.

As for the painting itself the key to a good paint job is patience, so he says. You are gonna be doing a lot of buffing. Also agreed that the hardest part about it is the clean room. Particles love to fly around and get into your wet paint and mess things up. Then you have to buff them out again which means you have to repaint those coats again. Can be a real pain.

Good luck though.

Oh and make sure the floor is also damp when you are painting because I guess there is a certain chemical in the paint that will attack your eyes because of the moisture, but if the ground is damp it will hit the floor.

even with wet floor should always wear eye protection as with any type of situation that envolves any chemicals there is a reason they make the safety gear. i know far too many people that end up injured because of lack of safety gear.
