Need a new Sub for now

Two of my 12 subs have shorts, so they cut off when the volume is turned up. And my last sub starts smoking at high volume. All probably my fault somewhere down the line.

I'm looking for an inexpensive thump for my single 12" bandpass box until I can complete my custom installation. (which is being delayed by an extensive learning curve)

Would one of the offbrand cheap subs with high RMS rating on ebay be okay for a quick solution?

any sub put into that biox is going to self destruct most likly. a band pass enclosure has to be built to the spec's of a specific speaker or they well justb blow. so you can get any cheap speaker and throw it in there but its going to blow up. especialy if the box already ate 3 speakers.

I bought the box from a crackhead for $10 with the MTX inside. The MTX never worked, just cut off at high volume. I removed the plexi glass and install the free air subs reverse and one didn't work at high volume like the MTX. The other worked fine until last week, when it started smoking. (It was hooked up to the JBL 1200.1 at half gain. Which was fine until I played a new CD loud. I didn't know that the bass in the CD was so strong.)

The point>> The box only blew one speaker. (If you say it was the box, probably not now)

Should I try another speaker in this bandpass? Or will it more than likely blow?

half gain? you need to set gain at what ever your preout voltage is from HU.... these subs could be blowing because the gain is set wrong and they are clipping infact it sort of sound like that a bit. and yes i think this box well probaly eat subs. but it may be more of a combination thats destroying them so fast.

Half gain... meaning only turning the gain halfway around to keep the speaker in one peace.<
. The subs gave me the same problems before the new amp and the new box. One Pioneer didn't work when I pulled it out of storage after a year.I bought the JBL because I thought I had a problem with my amp. Bought the box because I thought it was the speakers. So I think the subs had the short before I even used the new box. My old box was dual 12" box sealed.

I do think the last sub was clipping bad when I played the new CD. Then it started smoking 30 sec. into the first song.

Great. At least I'm learning. . . . the hard way.

So I guess now I need a cheap sub and box? any recommendations?

A Bandpass box that is not well matched in front/rear & porting to a given sub, will net the results you have mentioned. Problem with a BP box, the subs can be dying from several reasons and you'd never hear it until the sub croak.

If you were running these subs with the 1200.1, way too much juice for all but the most potent of subs. Each sub failure noted is the result of too much power and/or severe overexcursion problems. This box is costing you way more than it's worth... I'd say fire wood, is the best thing for this box as the box cost $10.00 and cost you 3 subs.

My best advice here... if it ain't working right... time for a change in strategy. Don't feed this box another sub as you already know what the results are.

Define Insanity: If we always do what we have always done.. and expect different results.... that's my definition of insanity. Not directed at you in any way... just how things seem to work in the world I live in. GRIN
