a friend has a pontiac sunfire base model and he was told it was a 8ohm stereo and could not handle 4 ohm speakers. which seemed very unusualt and unlikly to me but could someone give me a for sure awnser on that? Replies (6) uochronos on 06/3/2004 02:50:00 ok i was wrong its not a 4 speaker system its the Monsoon 8 speaker system with an amp. is this amp stable down to 2 ohm? basicaly he wanst to put new 4ohm 6x9's on rear deck but the old ones are 8 ohm stock and he doesnt want to mess it up[ ttocs on 06/4/2004 23:35:15 if the stock speakers are 8 ohms, then he will have a problem. You could always try 2 - 5.25" speakers in series...... uochronos on 06/5/2004 02:47:50 well its an 8 speaker system with an amp... does this mean the amp is only capable of an 8 ohm load? or does it mean that its a 4 channel amp and there are 2 speakers in parelell to each channel with a 4 ohm load... my theory was this if its a 4 channel amp built into the car with each channel stock having a 4 ohm load then if he poped a 4 ohm speaker in the rear deck that would net 2.66 ohms (4 ohm +8 ohm) and a 4 channel amp shuould handle 2.66 ohms. does that make since? also if this is not going to work then can you tell me where he might find aftermaret 8ohm 6x9's or even new OEM 8 ohm 6x9's he wjust needs something there his stock ones where out when he bought the car. and he want something there swez on 06/5/2004 20:43:15 I have found GM often uses a 10 ohm 6x9 in the rear deck to help balance out the SPL between front and rear components. The front speakers are often a typical 4 ohm version. If you have a few spare 4 ohm speakers lying around, can test these off the rear channels and see how they sound at low power. If clean sound, then kick up the system a little and see what you get. If you note severe distortion, amp gets hot or shuts off, then you can always add a 4 ohm resistor (25-50 watts) in series with a 4 ohm speaker and that will match up the required ohmic load to the amp. Also, can go to Parts Express and look for 8 ohm speakers that will fit the cavities. A 6.5" speaker will fit in a 6x9" cavity with an install panel plate adapter. Swez uochronos on 06/6/2004 02:05:52 ahh resistors my savior maybe yet again i didnt even think to suggest that... unfortunatly he is unsure where the stock amp is and i would assume its in a hard place to get to too feel if it bgets hot. and he already purchased a set of speakers before checking... crutch field lists 4 ohm speakers when i input his car so i think they would work. i just dont want to tell him to go for it and ahve the amp over heat and cuase a fire. swez on 06/6/2004 12:38:07 Understand your concern as this is one of my thoughts as well. From my basic research, Monsoon is an ampless HU in dash with a remote amplifier usually mounted to the rear deck of the vehicle. Just follow the rear speaker lines as they will lead to the amplifier that powers them. You can try writing to Crutchfield about your plans and note the details you have and see what they have to offer in terms of recommendations. I am sure Crutch Techs are familiar weith the Monsoon audio system and can give you some useful inputs. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
