Would anyone recommend enclosing the 6x9's on my back dash - nothing is under it but a bunch of steel.

Probably will need something back there to keep the subwoofer frequencies from roughing up the cones of the x9's in rear.
Most of these speakers are designed for "free air" (no enclosures) applicaions. However, if you have the room for a box, it won't hurt performance. Either way, if there are no baffles to block out bass waves, you'll definitely want to do something to isolate them from bass.
