I am looking at getting a pair of 10" Kicker Comp VRs model number -01C10VR. Now im looking for an amp to power these subs, I am choosing between either the Kicker KX600.1 or KX400.1 I am planning to run the subs in series in the box. other then that im open to suggestion. If you can recommend a better amp for my situation it would be appreciated. Replies (4) Swez on 05/24/2003 12:21:11 Not sure which version you mean here mate! Comp VR's come in 2 & 4 ohm DVC models. If you are going with either Kicker amp, they can handle 2 ohm loads, but not less. So, a pair of 2 ohm DVC's is what you'll need. Look here for the details: http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-yUZzhLOr8Zu/ProdView.asp?s=0&cc=01&c=10&g=67600&I=2062C10VR2 To get 2 ohms total, easy way is to wire each sub for 4 ohms (series), then wire both subs together in parallel for a 2 ohm load to amp. If you have a hard time understanding how this is done... have a look here: http://www.jlaudio.com/tutorials/wiring/index.html#2dvcsp The Kicker site should have some drawings as well as the owners manual. Can get that off www.kicker.com web site, under a .pdf file for your intended Comp VR subs. As for amp to choose... up to you and your wallet. There is not that much difference in SPL output between the 400 & 600 watt versions. You can expect ~1.5 more dB of SPL from the 600, but the added current draw "may cause" you to make some upgrades in your electrical system as well. Depends on how much ALT output you have now and CCA rating of the BAT. Swez RucKuS on 05/28/2003 10:54:59 I was planning on useing the 2 ohm model of the Kicker. As for the amp im more worried about which amp will better power my subs for the money. Since the Kickers comps are rated 400watts RMS and Im getting 2 netting 800watts should i be getting a bigger amp, or will 600 watts do. Price range is about $300-$350CAD($200-250 USD) and I have found Kicker KX600.1 for about $250(USD) on ebay. If you can recommend a cheaper amp that will work just as well please do, I could always use a couple extra dollars in my pocket. Swez on 05/28/2003 11:16:57 Yes, look at the JBL 600.1 for more power per sub. This amp version is are Class D and 1 or 2 ohm stable, but has the same output at either 1 or 2 ohms. www.ikesound.com sells JBL at some of the best prices off the web, but did not see the 600.1 listed on that site. The other option is ebay. They run ~$200.00 USD + S/H. www.justamps.com has the 600.1 as well, but is $220.00 USD, so ebay is your best bet for lower prices. Also, JBL rates their amps a bit more concervatively than Kicker, so you wil get a few more watts RMS from the JBL vs Kicker. In all, a fine amp and I recommend JBL as I too, own and have used JBL for years. (if that matters to you at all ?) Swez PS To be an effective amp shopper, need to look at the RMS power output (NOT PEAK) at desired ohms load and what voltage input was used to derive RMS power output numbers. FYI: Some better amps use 12.5-13.0 volts. Others cheat a bit and use 13.5-14.4 volts input to get the RMS numbers they quote. The former amp rating are a good number... the 13.5 and up voltage rated amps are selling less than advertised, when compared to the concervatievely rated <13.0 volt amp makers Not an apples to apples comparison here. xplicitblitzboi on 05/28/2003 14:40:19 www.etronics.com sells the 600.1 for around 175 ;) Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
