Whats the difference between Watts RMS and Watts Peak? Replies (1) swez on 05/27/2004 16:34:53 Peak watts is the maximum spike an amp will deliver before "clipping" (excess distortions) become noticable. Once beyond that limit, fuses blow or speakers die. RMS voltage is an average music source wattage rating. When looking at amplifers and subs... always use the RMS reference to compare one item with another. NOTE: Some amp makers play a little game and change the rules a bit. They only give peak watt numbers and no input voltage spec either. A quality amp is often spec'd like this: 2 x 100 watts RMS @ 4 ohms 2 x 150 watts RMS @ 2 ohms 1 x 300 watts RMS Bridged (4 ohms) Voltage source: 12.9 volts There's more to know... but these are the basics you'll need to be mindful of.
