JL e2150 amp question...

Hey guys,

Just have a quick question. Do you think that this would be a worth while upgrade? I currently have a Rockford Fosgate 201s amp running a 12" Alpine TypeS sub. My amp was rated at 275rms and the this JL is only 150rms. From what I know JL makes a much cleaner amp then RF. I found a really good deal on the JL so do you guys think that it would be worth me spending and extra $100-150 (CND) for the JL amp?

Thanks,
Murph

i honestly like the punch amps and your amp is rated at 200watts rms at 4 ohm not 275 acording to rockford. its reall a choice in opinion your subs are not going to sound better off the jl though in my opinion. i have 2 type r 10" subs off a high end phoenix gold 500watt amp. and my friend has a 500watt amp i dont even know the name but its a really off brand infact it says 1000watt on it but rms at 14volt is more like 500. and my subs sound the same hooked to his amp assuming all the settings are set right. they arnt quite as loud but its not really a noticible quality differnce that i can see anyway.

Thanks uochronos for your opinion. However, not that it really matters but my RF amp is actually 275rms according to the so called "Birth Sheet" that came with the amp in the box.

Anyways so what you are saying is that its just a matter of opinion with the sound quality? I think I just might save up and do a bigger upgrade instead of a bunch of small ones. Hopefully I can save some money that way.

Anyone elses opion would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Murph

well if the RF is puting out 275 at 13volts then its better then the jl in my mind. the jl's are all internaly regulated now so it puts out 150watts at 12-14volts so unlike the RF your not going to get more then its rated for. and i think saving for a big upgrade would probaly pleasde you much more then this little change.

I think RF now rates their amps based on 14.4 volts input supply. That would give you the 275 RMS (bridged) noted on the birth sheet. In reality, your true output will only be a few watts less at say 13.5 volts. (~256 watts RMS) A difference you probably cannot detect with human ears.

That JL amp noted is only 150 RMS @ 4 ohms bridged. Really, going backwards here in power available from this amp as compared to Punch 201S.

If you want more bump from your present amp & sub, consider a ported enclosure. This will give you a +3dB increase in bass SPL and you only need to change the enclosure... assuming that sub is OK for ported boxes. Checked the specs for more details and the Alpine S-SWS 1222D (DVC 2+2) can be used in a ported enclosure:

Specs:

sealed box volume: 0.85-1.5 cubic feet
ported box volume: 1.25-2.0 cubic feet

Whick Alpine sub model do you have?

unless you are going to significantly upgrade the pwr rating you probably will not notice a difference. The "e" series is a great amp, but is jl's entry line. If you stepped up to the 500.1 I think you would be impressed.....

Agreed! The 500/1 is a whole different animal than either amp mentioned to date. However, your sub is rated at 300 RMS so you would have a good deal of extra power in the form of "Dynamic headroom" to handle high SPL transient peaks found in most CD music today.

That's a real plus too... having extra "dynamic headroom" means the amp will rarely (if ever) clip, if set up is done properly.
