May Day, I am currently trying to install the Sony CD player in my car. The car was not new to me and did not have a radio in it when I purchased it. Apparently the old owner wanted the stereo and took it along with the wiring harness. I have a bunch of wires that I need to match with a buch from the Cd player which I can I.D. from it's manual. If anybody can help it would be appreciated. I have read somethings that state that FORD does change it's wire color from time to time. Mike Replies (14) ttocs on 05/23/2004 21:59:28 they are rarely the same in that period.... We first need to find out if it had/has the "premium sound" stereo in there. normally I would tell you to look at the factory radio but....... Get in the trunk and look on the back seat, and under the rear deck. Ford/mercury liked to hide a common ground amp back there. It is in the shape of a hexagon and has a bunch of holes in it, two wire hrns comming out. It does not look like anything car audio.... From there we can narrow things down. Do any of the wires in the dash look like speaker wires? Mike on 05/24/2004 12:05:18 It does have the Premium Sound System. Yes it does have the Hex-shaped ground amp on the rear deck. Also yes there appears to be speaker wires coing from the harness up front. Thanks for the Rapid response. You can include another e-mail address, (work) and maybe we can talk 9-5 on this matter. mjsucese@rochester.rr.com Thanks Again, Mike ttocs on 05/24/2004 13:34:03 just sent ya a message from my 2-way. We will need to keep responces down below 250 characters but no problem. Take a AA battery and touch one side to one speaker wire, the other wire to the other side. If they have bypassed the amp properly the speaker will make a popping noise. If it does nothing then try a different set of wires. Mike on 05/24/2004 21:59:26 Was Typing My Findings and the screen went away. i wiil send a new 1 later.???? Mike on 05/25/2004 20:24:03 Hi I am trying again. 15 Wires are coming out of the Dash Board, from 2 strands, 1 long 1 short. Short Harness: Solid Black: Ground Blue/ Red Stripe: 10.7 Volts With lights on Only Yellow/ Black Stripe: 12 Volts Acc on, 0 Volts with Acc off Orange/ Light Blue Stripe: .23 Volts Acc on Solid Blue: .23 Volts Acc on Orange/ Black Stripe: Attached To Red Stereo Wire: 12 Volts Green/ Yellow Stripe: Attached to Yellow Stereo Wire: 12 Volts Longer Strand: Black/White Stripe--( Thicker ): .23 Volts Black/White Stripe-- ( Thinner ) : Acc on 6 Volts White/Pink Stripe: .23 Volts Blue/Black Stripe: .23 Volts Solid Green: .23 Volts Solid Black: 12 Volts Purple/White Stripes: .23 Volts The trunk has the Amp in it: The only POWER I found there was between a Black/White Stripe and a Yellow/Black Stripe 12.3 Volts I am not confident that these checks were done correctly. The Acc was on during the checks. The Harness on the Stereo unit asks me to connect the following: Blue/White AMP/ ANT REM to AMP REMOTE IN RED: to the +12 v power terminal which is energized in the accessory position of the ignition key YELLOW: to the +12V power terminal which is energized at all times BLACK: to Ground Speakers: White: Left Front + & - Gray: Right Front + & - Green: Left Rear + & - Purple: Right Rear + & - I have the stereo so that I can make the CD eject and Play. I have not hooked up any antena or speakers. I will try the speakers tomorrow. i am pretty confident that the power issue is complete. There are too many 12 Volt lines left for me to attach anymore. Help if you can. If you have access to a Fax: ( 585 ) 889-4636 ( W ) e-mail: ( H ) msucese@rochester.rr.com ( W ) mjsucese@rochester.rr.com Thank You in advance for your help. Mike Sucese ttocs on 05/26/2004 11:35:45 it sounds like you have narrowed it down alot, we should be able to finish it now. First check the pwr on the amp again with the key on and off. There are two ways that amps are pwrd/switched. the most common way is that there is a +12v constand and ground going to the amp, as well as a third wire(remote turn on, amp on, ect). The 3rd wire will switch a relay, that then allows the constant and ground to supply pwr. The 3rd wire will (normally) go to +12v to turn the amp on. The other way amps are switched on/off is by simply turning what would be the +12v constant off with the radio. If you get in there and do not find any wires switching on the amp, start trying the other wires and see if you can find one that does. The amp has to switch some way. ttocs on 05/26/2004 11:35:47 it sounds like you have narrowed it down alot, we should be able to finish it now. Mike on 05/26/2004 18:07:19 I checked the Amp: The Yellow wire /Black stripe has 12.6Volts with Acc on. There is not any Voltage present when the Acc is off. There is not any other wires that show any voltage. Un-expected findind: I touch the Yellow/ Black and the Red Solid and Get the same 12.6 volts. Just touching the Yellow/ Black stripe to the car frame I get the above 12.6 volts. Touching the Red to the car frame I get 0 volts. Mike ttocs on 05/26/2004 23:03:08 ford loves red for gound, and that is the case today. Sounds like the yellow/blk is what switches the amp. You might just want to check your fusebox for the premium system fuse. I am almost willing to bet it is blown... After checking and/or replacing it we can test for the speaker wires. You will need the key on, and some kind of audio source. You can use the output of a walkman/diskman, or a signal generator if you have access to one. I have a cheap one that makes a buzzing noise you might be able to find at the local rat shack. But all the wires you were getting .23v on, we need to test. touch one wire to one side of the input and one wire to the other side of the input. If you don't hear anything, disconnect one wire(leave the other on) and try a different wire. Do this until you hear the source from a speaker, or you have tried all available combinations. When a speaker makes noise, twist those to around one-another or mark them somehow. I am confused that there are only 7 wires with the .23v on, there should be 8. Check and see if you missed one? ttocs on 05/26/2004 23:05:12 are we having fun yet? I bet you can see why I enjoy this huh? Sometimes I have to think I need my head checked, well most of the time......... swez on 05/28/2004 17:35:27 Keep going guys.. am enjoying the read and who knows... may learn something this way. Sounds pretty complicated, Swez Mike on 05/28/2004 22:03:42 I still have the same number of .23 volt lines and the same number of lines that are sticking out of the dash. There is not a fuse blown. I believe we need to by-pass the amp in the Sony or the one on the Ford. The lines to the speaker lines are in tact, we need to hook them up to the Sony. I see that they are in pairs, same color except one has a stripe. That means one is the positve and one is the negative. There are not any wires left on the back of the Sony. The 15 wires sticking out of the dach board? Some must be for other things? We must find a way to power the amp on the rear deck, to use the current harness, or find a way to go around the current use. Probably my mis-diagnosis from the rear harnesses? I only have the original readings, confirmed. I am no electrician. Dah. What do we suggest? I am humming to road noise. Mike swez on 05/28/2004 22:40:08 Mike, Not to worry, Ttocs will get you through the process. In the mean time, got a portable boombox you can take along to gvbe you some tunes to hummmm to... not just road noise? Beg, borrow or snatch one, so you have some moosik to enjoy in the rebuilding process. Swez Mike on 05/29/2004 13:24:56 Hi People, I am screwing around ( in the Dark ) with the radio hooking up wire after wire. I can get the CD player to play, while it is playing I can touch any of the 8 wires that come out of the stereo, that I am making an assumption , that they are the positive and negative leads that are supposed to go to the speakers. To some of the wires that are coming from the cars harness that read .23 volts and make music. At least it is the way I remember it . All 8 of these wires have a voltage reading of 5.7 . I know that there are no mistakes made by me on this one. I wonder why one of the pairs wouldn't be the ground. I have identified 3 of the 4 speakers. The music comes out, but there isn't any way to change the volume. If I try to ground the sister lead from the same color pair, the music stops and I have to un-hook and it comes back on. Next expierment is to hook the Sony CD Player to the Hot Wire on the Transformer atop the pole down the street. Mike Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
