First question is how many amps should my isolator be for my car and system? Second question is what size wire should be used to connect the isolator to the batteries? Is there anything I should know about installing a battery in my trunk that will prevent headaches? Replies (6) compvr15s on 05/17/2004 16:04:05 i would recommend going with a higher out put alternator and a more powerful battery highest CCA battery that will fit in your stock spot. and then upgrade your cables from your battery to your alternator and your batt. ground to the frame with 4awg wire. im not sayin dont go with an isolator but you probably dont need that. your alt is still gonna strain to supply juice to both batterys.. if you get a higher amp alternator you should not have any problem. i know my stock gm alternator i think 95 or 105 amps not sure which, it handles two class d amps that are rated 60 amps each. for what reason are ya doing the dual battery? are you having head light problems? if so what size wire do you have powering your amps? and are your amps grounded to good bare metal areas? good luck .... hope we can help ya. just tell us your problem and im sure it will get resolved. uochronos on 05/17/2004 16:08:11 if your alternator is straining with 1 battery then its well be straining twice as hard with 2... your best bet as compvr said is getting a bigger alternator and then a bigger batery then going for 2 batteries. a second battery for the amps should be the last thing just to buffer it so your getting good voltyage constantly. on ebay you can suualy get a 200amp alternator for around 200$ the guy i bought mine from on ebay gives a lifetime warranty with them. just look for someone selling alot of alternators and ask them if they have one for yours. Noid on 05/17/2004 19:36:06 I can't find a higher power amplifier for my car. I have a 97 mirage 1.8 liter if you can help. I have bought a bigger battery. I don't drive the car much so I haven't noticed my headlights dim, but the lights on the inside of the car dim. And this is with half of the gain from the amp. I also am planning to install an exterior light kit and place neons in the interior by late June. I have been advised to just puchase a second battery by many people. Including a guy who sells high powered altenators on ebay. (Of course none for the Mirage) Noid on 05/17/2004 19:46:56 My factory altenator puts out 75amps ttocs on 05/17/2004 21:34:34 that would be backwards from what I have known as well. Adding a battery puts a significantly higher load on the alt and will shorten the life of it. Will it shorten it more then without it? I don't know for sure but I have put many systems in my own vehicle and others and have not heard of them having issues. I actually have never installed a second battery in my 7 yrs of installing.... Try it, let me know how it goes. uochronos on 05/18/2004 16:17:08 ok a friend of mine owns an alternator shop that makes custom alternators he said a 150-170amp alternator can fit in stock spot i didnt know what engine size yours was so thats why the 150-170. so look for people in your home town that do custom alternator and charging systems Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
