Hey guys! System is finally done.. now moving to car video. I'm looking for an in-dash monitor. I plan on using a playstation 2 (which can pull double duty as serve as game center and DVD player) with this screen. However, I have heard that buying the expensive Alpines or Pioneers is just paying for the name. Image quality wise, i've heard many cheaper models compare. I can eaisly pick one up on ebay for like 300. However heres the problem: I do not need a built in dvd player or internal amplifier; I plan on running 2 (of the 3) RCA cables from the PS2 directly to the monitor. The other RCA audio cable will be hooked to my HU's aux input, so audio will be run through my HU. How do you guys think this will work? Thus, this eliminates my requirements for a built in dvdplayer or a amplifier, which is what really drives up the price of these in-dash units. If I'm going to use a PS2 anyways, why buy one with a built in dvdplayer right? Also, does the monitor require a separate "brain" to process the video signal (in this case where the PS2 is serving as the dvd player) ? There are two RCA inputs behind the monitor, so can the signal from the PS2 go directly to the monitor? Thanks! You can use the ps2 for the video and should not have any problems, other then trying to mount it.... Some monitors will have a seperate brain depending on what it does. Tinker18 on 05/3/2004 16:56:00 i dont know a whole lot about car audio/video, but i do know quite a bit about home electronics. I would suggest not using your ps2 for a dvd player, even though it has that accessory and is able to do so, i have seen it to cause problems with the ps2's reading capability in the long run. I too have a PS2, and i used dvd's on it for almost a year, and it started to mess up, saying "disc read error". a couple of my buddies also have them, and after using it as a dvd console in conjuction with a gaming console, theirs started to mess up also. so far i know of about 12-13 cases of this happening, so you might want to look into it. devastating12s on 05/3/2004 17:33:20 d'oh! just realized i messed up the RCA cable description.. I meant one RCA video to the monitor and the 2 RCA audio (left/right) to the HU. i'll look into the PS2 concerns.. but I'm buying my friend's PS2 which is version 8 and has the dvd progressive scan. So I'm assuming since they included a progessive scan feature this means Sony geared it towards playing dvds (and hopefully fixed bugs from previosu verions!) .. Or I could be totally wrong.. =) saintanddolphin on 05/3/2004 17:59:54 The problem with the PS2 is not really video its the design of the laser. The PS2 can generate a good deal of heat effecting long turn accuracy or ability of the laser to read the multiple formats it was designed to read. The fix is fairly simple. There is a slight variation in repair for first generation versus second generation. The laser has adjustible voltage pots(potentiometers) that increase or decrease voltage + or - 2 volts. It does reguire openning the case therefore voiding your warranty and if voltage is increased to much its to the trash can for your PS2. Tinker? If you want a details on the pot adjustment I could email you with the directions. Mike Tinker18 on 05/3/2004 19:48:37 yes, i would appreciate that. i have fixed it temporarily by adjusting the depth of the laser, but it is a pain to do it every time untill the dvd reads. send me an email@godsmackguy123@yah00.com. once again thanks. and devastating, you still might want to look into it....im not sure i will buy another ps2, maybe xbox though...
