Installation Help Please:Speakers, Crossovers, Amp

I just signed up on this forum a few minutes ago, so I'm just getting familiar.

I've installed an Alpine 7892 head unit, and have ordered 2 pair of MB Quarts speakers, Reference co-axes for the rear of a 2002 Subaru Outback, and Premium component speakers for the front.

I have the opportunity to add a used Xtant 404M amp to the system. My questions:

How should I set the crossovers for the Premium speakers? How should I set the crossovers in the head unit?

Where is a good place to mount the crossover units (they are about 4x5 inches)

Is the Xtant a good amp? Will it give me enough power. I'm not interested in cranking the music deafening loud, just good sound.

I'm not planning on addind a sub-woofer?

What advice can people give me or other helpful info. While I've installed many car stereos, I've never dealt with crossovers, and don't want to blow (literally) things!

Thanks,

Reid

well, Xtant is a very good company, very high quality, you wont be disappointed with the amp. That amp and those quarts would be a good combination. I would recommend a subwoofer just to round out the lows of your system. If you think that you dont need it, thats good for you because you will be saving yourself some money.

but if you do want a sub here are some recommendations:
Jl 10 or 12w0
Kicker comp VR 10 or 12
infinity perfect 12 or 10

Sub amps:
JBL 150.1
MTX 421D
Kicker 02KX400.1

I'd answer the rest of ur question but i gotta go, i'll try and help u with the x-overs later if i have the chance.

Blitz,

Thanks for the help. If you have time to help me with the x-overs, that would be great. You can also email me directly at rthaler@yahoo.com

Thanks,

Welcome! HAPPY

The crossovers can be mounted near the amp, but you will be running 2 pair of wires per side this way. Use this option, only if you have no local space in the door panel or a place close to speakers for mounting.

The other option, is to see if there is adequate space behind the door panels where they can close to the speakers, which is the preferred way.

As for HU or amp crossover settings, can use either with good results. Most guys set the HP filter between 60-80 Hz if they do not use a subwoofer. Depends on how well your MBQ's handle the lows in this application. If you choose to use a small sub later, then cross over settings can be changed. Full range HP set to ~80 Hz., and sub LP set to 80 - 100 Hz., should do well

I too, recommend a modest sub system for full music experience. You are losing the low octave where the bass lives (35-100 Hz.) without one. Does not have to be a big boomer system. Just a modest single 10 or 12" and modest amp of say 100-150 watts RMS is more than adequate.

Have you looked at the Infinity BassLink? Nice, compact system with built in amp. Comes in a 10" version w/ a passive radiator for getting those deep lows. Comes in 2 flavors too.

Just click on links below and look at both options... BassLink and BassLink X. The price on these models are very good compared to other bigger sites.

http://www.justwoofers.com/Woofer_Pages/Infinity/infinity_BassLink.htm $229.99

Good luck with your install!

PS Not sure on the Comps, if that crossover has an attenuator feature. MBQ's tend to be a bit "bright" and can be toned down by the HU EQ or crossover attenuator. A -3dB level might be your preferred setting here for the Comps. A little tweaking before you button everthing back up is recommended.

those amps are nice, but they are not all that installer friendly.. If it is the one that has the the silver and gold top that you take off to mount and adj, I have installed a couple. Every time they confused me, and the other installers. All the functions on those little sliders. I remember literally thinking that I had never seen this before. Four pro installers, they knew more then me, standing around inside a fullsize chevy truck, READING THE INSTRUCTIONS!

Also be very carefull that you don't strip wires over the amp with the cover off. You would be suprised the damage that can be done to an amp with just a single strand from inside a speaker/pwr wire, they tell me anyway....
