hi everyone, just curious as to the subs you've had, or currently have and how they perform.......... Replies (17) cplkittle on 04/25/2004 21:35:16 First of all, a big factor in performance depends on the quality of the HU, RCAs, Crossovers, Amplifiers, and Enclosure design. With that in mind, here are a few of my opinions on several subs. Audiobahn (non competition) Good subs for the price, very flashy, most are high on the efficiency scale. For the most part these are SPL subs, but sound pretty good in a sealed enclosure. a little too muddy for me in vented applications. Eclipse all aluminum, aluminum/magnesium, and titanium cone subs.. All of these are exellent subs. The 8102's (10" alum cone) subs are pretty bad. ~1" excursion in a 1.25^ft sealed box. JL audio Good subs on the low end models. The W6's are very efficient and clean The W7's are probably the loudest and hardest hitting on the market right now.. if you have a grand to spare to buy one. Diamond - My favorite. CM3 series are diamond's lowest priced model, and they are at the high end of the line. M6 series (M6 Mark II -2004 model) These are in the same ballpark as the eclipse titanium series. Very impressive performance. TDX - These are the bad boys. High end competition subwoofer. Kevlar cone (70% lighter, 70% stronger than other materials). Painfully loud and very clean, compares to the W7s. JBL (GTi series) Very powerful competition subs, the only drawback to these is that there is noticable motor noise from the basket structure design (not car engine noise). uochronos on 04/26/2004 02:36:38 i have a set of alpine type R 10" subs very nice subs in a sealed box. very loud off 550watts rms thats around 50watts under powering them and they are quite clean for the price i would recomend these to anyone looking for clean powerfull subs are a very reasonable price 220$ for a pair of them off ebay. i'am currently purchasing a elemental designs 12A and i well report back on that when i get it installed... powering it with a 1200watt avionix amp in a sealed box should be impressive:) zInal3 on 04/26/2004 05:06:33 what about Nakamichi subs if compared to the top brands mentioned above? ( I have been looking for reviews for this particular sub these past few weeks.. ) Swez told me that this sub has high SQL .... any more infos about it ? uochronos on 04/26/2004 12:47:22 i love SQ and spend alot fo money on car audio but i cant afford nakamichi stuff and the one place that sales it here in portland is so high end that if you walk in and dont look like you have tons of money they dont talk to you(literaly personaly experience walked in with 1000$ cash looking for bose speakers and they wouldnt even speak to me) anyhoo so i hacvnt even had a chance to listen to any nakamichi equipment and i think you well find most others havnt heard there stuff either...its just too expensive to be practicale unless you are doing this professional or have tons of cash just falling out of all the drawers and cabinats at home:) Tinker18 on 04/26/2004 18:02:14 opinions on infinity kappa perfect 12's.?br zInal3 on 04/28/2004 12:51:57 Ahh... i never thought about the price would be expensive overthere. Just wanna share my story; Within 3 months of joining CK , I learned lots of things about CarAudio.. plus the information about electronic insbrbrProduct knowledge and the Capacitor myth (No Offense) that were never mentioned at the place where I'm living. To cut the story short, I just can't decide on which sub to use for my car, My amp gives about 550RMS perchannel. My choices are Alpine type R , Cadence (orange coloured ones), the Aluminium surface Audiobahn and the Nakamichi sub.(the prices are more or less the same ) Which one is the best? Thank you swez on 04/28/2004 20:28:38 I'd go for the Naks.... Bahns are OK, Cadence is above average as are the Alpine R's... but the Nak's are probably your best choice for an SQL sub of the ones noted. I have a pair of Sound Stream SPL 10's. They are 250 RMS, 4+4 DVC's. Not the top of the line... but the only decent DVC I could find 3 years ago under $150.00 each. They sound good in a 1.5 cf sealed enclosure. That's 3.0 cf internal with a divider board, wired for 4 ohms and wired to a JBL DA-1002 2 channel amp. (~350 RMS) Sure, these subs can take more power, but I am happy with the deep bass they deliver. I may revamp the enclosure to a 1.0 cf per chamber for better punch and a tad less deep bass. They are not im my present car yet, but I am powering them with 1 channel off a Peavey Pro CS-800 amp and they sound very good with that much power. (~500 RMS) Less boomy now as I have them in a large garage of ~500 sq feet. (5,000 cf) Very happy with them ever since I bought them too.... no problems and still going strong after 3 years. Swez zInal3 on 04/29/2004 10:17:45 Alright then, I'll go for Nakamichi subs. Thanks Swez , youre the Greatest ! been helping me here since day 1 GRIN Anyway, the caraudio shop in my area is selling JLW6 now, it just arrived yesterday. The price is 2 times the Naks Sub ... so this is my last question about Subs; Which 12" sub would u choose between the Naks and JLW6? I'll be using a ported box Thanx and i'm sorry for my ignorance Tinker18 on 04/29/2004 19:16:51 i was thinking of getting either two 10w6v2's or 2 12" kappa perfects, which should i go with, the 12's? or the 10? swez on 04/30/2004 11:28:16 Z: Either sub is in the class of High SQL performance. JL is very expensive here as are Nak's. But personally, lots of guys use JL and love em. Nak's are rare here due to high cost, but definitely a high end sub. Let price, preference and performance dictate your choice. Can you find a place to listen to both subs as an A/B comparison? If that is possible, your ears will tell you which is best for your tastes. Tink: 12" subs tend to take more power, have more cone area to push more bass. If you have the space for a pair of 12's, go that route if you want louder bass. These tend to be a tad more efficient with power input VS SPL output. They cost a bit more too. The 10's will do a good job as well, but don't have as much cone area and generally, handle a bit less power. They can go low and get loud too, depending on the amp and enclosure design. It really depends on the space you have for an enclosure. Bottom line, depends on your budget, power from amp, type of music you like best and enclosure size. I wonder what would happen if we put a few M-80s in its mouth and a few in the anal canal? Stand back as the fecal matter will definitely hit the rotary ocsillator on this one! hehe Swez PS No comment wanted or accepted from the animal rights left wingers! Tinker18 on 04/30/2004 17:04:13 guess im the horse in this equation eh? saintanddolphin on 04/30/2004 18:09:51 I am sorry Tink if you got offended..Just having a little fun at your expense. Sometime the posters are dry and not as enthusiastic as others so its just a way to have a little fun with a member we like rather than someone that has no sense of humor. If it offended you I am sincerely sorry. Mike Tinker18 on 04/30/2004 18:52:15 you didnt offend me mike, was just saying i understand that i was being redundant and that i know it has a tendency to be nerve racking, i appreciate all your help and swez's. you both have helped me a great deal. swez on 04/30/2004 19:45:26 Your NOT the horse Tinker... the issue is the horse... I would never insult any of our readers.... just playfully showing my "kid" side here. No offense implied.. hopefully none taken.
