does this matter any, would a amplifier that plays at 96 db or higher sound better?

The S/N ratio is a measure of how much noise free gain is available from the amp. The higher that number, the better. This assumes a clean signal in and a gain ratio that adds very little noise to the audio output of the amp.

Anything over 80 dB is a good number. It's when one gets <60 dBn, you may notice some sound degradation.
