well i have a really small truck a little 84 mazda b2000 its a beater but i figured i would try to make it sound a little better. because of the limited space underneath the seats i wanted to know if anyone knew of some 8 inch subs that would fit under there, and some boxes they would go in. the measurements are a little thin, max 5 inches deep and the dimensions would have to be about 11 by 11. because of the limited space i didn't know whether to port or seal or polyfill or if anything would even fit. my money is limited and its not like i need competition subs, just something to give a little bass to my system. so i need some serious help and any help at all would be appretiated Replies (18) uochronos on 04/21/2004 00:09:37 could you measure and tell us how much space you have under them? and also do you have space behind them? and if so how much. oldmazda on 04/21/2004 01:05:48 i reameasured and it might have to be a little smaller than the dimensions i posted so i don't know if anything will fit, but then again i don't know much about subs. uochronos on 04/21/2004 01:49:11 seems reasonable i well do some looking and see if i can find a 8" thats around 4 inches deep... do you haveroom behind the seats though as i asked ebcause i have a friend with a 85 ranger that has quite a bit of room behind the seats and ranegrs and mazdas are very similar. oldmazda on 04/21/2004 17:26:38 i would have room behind the seats if i didn't have 6 by 9's back there, and when i got the truck there were 6 and 1/2s in the doors so i didn't know where else to put the 6 by 9s. i don't have an amp yet either so i still have quite a bit of figuring to do. if you have any ideas for an amp for just running the 8's i'd love to here it. asplundher on 04/21/2004 19:46:38 I happen to have a 86 B2000. I stand about 6'1" and have my seat about one to two notches from the farthest position and still have room for two 8's. I currently running two DVC Hollywood Excursions in separate boxes about a .3 box per woofer. The boxes are about 7" deep x 11" tall x 14" wide. They are running sealed with excellent response. oldmazda on 04/21/2004 20:49:01 that could work if i had another place to put my 6 by 9s that are currently behind the seats, also with those back there in custom 4 inch deep boxes with barely enough room. also i am 6 foot 1 and there is barely enough room in there for me so if i could put my boxes under the seats it would allow me to have maximum leg room. though i think i could probably mount the seats higher which would give me more room with the same amountof legroom. even with an extra in the boxes would still have to be about 5 inches deep. so any specs for this 8 inch sub boxes would be great. saintanddolphin on 04/21/2004 21:10:06 I have a 96' Nissan standard cab p/up.I am 6'1" and 225lbs. Behind my seat I have 2 10" Alpine type E subs. I built 2 sealed enclosures(1 for each) and i have 3 clicks from the furtherest position(just right). You could put the 6x9s in the door or dump them all together and put rounds or even comps up front. Just my 2 cents but comps in the door or kick panel would net better sq. Just ideas. Mike asplundher on 04/21/2004 22:02:26 I really don't think the 6x9's are necessary as the 8's are about the same size. Now what you can do is probably rebuild the 6x9 box to give you a better bass response, but it won't be as good as a solid pair of subs. My system consists of two memphis 4"'s in the stock dash locations and the same in the rear pillar locations. The two 8's sitting behind the seat. A four channel amp is running both the dash and subs. The only weak spot is the front stage for the dash kinda points down like other foriegn jobs. Later I plan to put a component set in the doors to counteract it. oldmazda on 04/22/2004 00:03:57 do you guys think i should just scrap the pioneer paper cone 6 and 1/2s in the doors, and just widen the holes to fit the 6 by 9s then build boxes for the 8's to go behind the seats? that would work and the sound would be better because it wouldn't be muffled by the seat. i would still need specs for boxes and everything if anyone could gimme some help with that it'd be great. i don't know the exact specs but my 6 by 9 boxes are pretty snug which altoger is about 5 inches deep. it gets narrower as it goes up thogh so would it make any difference on the sound if i compensated for this so that the face of the box would be kinda slanted. and would like to hear whether you think i should go sealed or ported. thanks for all the feed back by the way :) uochronos on 04/22/2004 00:21:06 most "truck" sub boxes are slanted for that exact reason... yes your 6x9's would sound better in the doors you can either make a bigger hole or get a decent set of 6 1/2's for aroudnd 50$ and use those... 6x9s give alot of bass but i personaly have never liked them for full range a good 2 way coaxil 6 1/2 would probaly sound nicer but if your looking for dercent sound and not much cash the call is up to you. swez on 04/22/2004 09:48:04 Interesting topic... the 6x9's can be moved to the doors if you really like them. You may be able to make an adapter plate to mount them in the same factory location as the 6.5" door speakers you have now. But I feel the same as many others about muti-element 6x9's... fine for rear fill. But not great for high SQ applications. As for the 8" subs, some creativity in enclosure design, may get you some very interesting results. Am wondering if an "L" shaped enclosure may help here. Depends on how much space you have under and behind the seats. (width, length & height) As for amping the system... a decent 4 channel amp will do fine. Can run the front speakers off the 2 front channels and bridge the rear channels for bass. You will need a pair of 8 ohm subs (wired in parallel) to hit a required 4 ohm load. Figure about 75 -100 watts RMS per channel should do a nice job here. Finally, do you have a bench seat or a pair of bucket seats in this vehicle? Swez oldmazda on 04/22/2004 13:24:19 i have bench seats, i was thinking about buying buckets from an auto wreckers but i don't really plan on having this truck for much longer than a year or 2 so i don't really wanna put too much money into it that i can't switch over into a newer truck. there really isn't much room, but i think i will just put the 8's behind the seats and basically replace my whole system. i just need to know some specs that would work behind my seats and whether they should be ported or not. thanks oldmazda on 04/22/2004 13:45:28 behind my seat they have to be narrower than 5 inches at the base, and it doesn't narrow that much. shorter that 12 inches and 14 wide asplundher on 04/22/2004 17:57:39 Do you already have the subs? If so then what are the specs or make and model. If you don't then some system planning will be needed. Tell us what exactly what you want so we can help you better. swez on 04/22/2004 20:19:44 Have a look at this option. Maybe you can duplicate this design, but scaled for 8" subs. In your case, a single sub would be adequate for now. If you get a new vehicle, can always buy a matching MTX sub (no eneclosure) and build or buy enclosure to fit your needs. oldmazda on 04/23/2004 02:04:39 that mtx enclosure is a little to pricy for me but it got me thinking about 10's, and mtx makes a sub that has a mounting the depth that might work. i found some 8's that might work though, they are no name brand, something like bull dog (never heard of them before this) they're really cheap 60 bucks for 2 8' subs with a box (that likely wouldn't do any good) and some neon light things that go around then(once again probably not very useful for myself considering my mounting space). you have to buy it all as a pakage though which in my opinion is downright stupid. they have 300 watts per sub which isn't bad, and i measured them in the store and they have about a 4.5' mounting depth which would be perfect. what do you guys think about this? oldmazda on 04/23/2004 02:20:02 alrite i think i found something even better if its real, if anyone has time they should check out this site and see if they have any half decent 8' subs and if anyone knows if this site is safe it would be awesome. http://www.audiooutfitter.com/cgi-bin/store/scan/st=db/co=yes/sf=category/se=Subwoofers/va=banner_image=/va=banner_text=.html?id=Rh3ezIrq asplundher on 04/23/2004 08:50:28 The best deal I have found recently for some 8"s is some Credence 8"s. Checkout their website: http://www.credencespeakers.com/ Also look for some on ebay. I got mine brand new in the box shipped for only $75. Some other good subs are the Audiobahn Natural Sound 8"'s with DVC's. Usually about $59 each. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
