my subs are just sittin in my car not being used since the tranny is junk, i was thinkin about bringing them inside and using them for some home audio bass, i have plenty now but with them i could have fun when the parents arnt home. my question is what size converter would i need to run just one of my kicker kx 600.1s has 2 30 amp fuses.. also instead of using my car head unit can i just use a set of pre-outs of my home reciever, or is the voltage too high. if its too high do they make a regulator for this. im not lookin to spend a ton of money but i want quality gear that wont ruin my equipment. thanx alot

Forget the regulator. Buy an amp that will accept RCA level outputs from your home receiver and use the amp to power your subs.

An power supply of that size can be very expensive. More than the cost of a decent 120 VAC amplifier. How much are you thinking in the budget for this?

The other option... use a car battery and battery charger to keep battery peaked. Not my favorite option... but if you have them lying around already... why not use them.

Price really depends on the power you want. Also, have to consider the ohmic load you can run with your subs.

Really, a 100 x 2 RMS amp would do a pretty good job for home use. Much more than that, things will be flying off the walls in the kitchen.. no joke

CompVR's right... 2+2 or 4+4 DVC's here?

dual 2 ohms wired to 4omhs right now, yea i figured it wouldnt take much to make them loud. other than ebay is there a good place to look at these types of amps, i figured prolly a 400-500 watt mono or 500-600 watt 2 channel. what are good brands to look for? thanx for the help swez.

For simplicity sake, consider a plate amp from Parts Express.

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&PartNumber=300-794&DID=7

Specifications:
• Measured power output: 180 watts RMS into 8 ohms @ .1% THD, 272 watts into 4 ohms @ 0.2% THD
• Signal to noise ratio: 101dB (A-weighted) • Dimensions: 10-3/8" W x 10-7/16" H x 3-1/4" D
• Enclosure cut out: 9" W x 9-1/4" H • Voltage: Selectable, 115/230V, 50-60 Hz, 450W
High-Power Class AB Amplifier
Variable Phase Adjustment
Rumble Filter
High-Pass Filter for Satellite Speakers
Auto On/Off Circuit
Gold plated connectors

At this price, 272 watts RMS @ 4 ohms load will do pretty well in you home setup. If you have 2 subs, a pair of amps will be great and set ya back less than $275.00.

If you want more power, have to start looking at other amps that can give you that. One thing though... a 600 watt amp will only give you a +3 dB increase in bass output/sub. Do you really need more than ~125 dB of SPL in your room?

PS Your next step is either high end Home gear or mid-grade Pro gear. Both will cost considerably more above 300 watts RMS/channel.

would somthing like this work swez
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=245-462

or is that not for home audio use, i dont have a problem using the plate amps but it looks kinda cheesy, is that amp i mentions 2 channel? if so ill get 400 watts to each sub at 4 ohms, that seems good. do those amps hook up through rca jacks like the plate amps or how do they work?

hey swez do ya think this is a better deal than the amps you showed me from parts express. i can get 2 of thess for 300 plus shipping. 90 day warrenty. 100 more watts for less than 30 dollars more. this should do the job well. what do ya think? thanx alot.

The Crown is Pro only. It has balanced onputs (XLR jacks) for input and speak on jacks for output section only. Nice amp and same family as JBL and Infinity amps... Harmon Intl. Good price too, but not well suited for home use unless you had balanced inputs. This is a 2 channel amp.

The Apex amp is similar to the plate amps I mentioned earlier. In fact, they may be APEX amps, sold through PE. This is more suitable for your home stereo application as it has RCA style inputs and 5-way binding posts for output to sub(s). The input section will take a maximum of 170mV to drive the amp to full power off RCA's and ~3.75 volts if using high level speaker inputs.

For your application, the plate amp makes th most sense. You can make a box or rack to make them look nice if you wish.
