I just bought the 12w7 and a 1000/1 jl amp. if i put that sub in a port/vented box, am i over powering it? and or should i put it in a sealed box? or should i just wait a few weeks and buy another 12w7? thanks Replies (12) CrashMechanic on 04/17/2004 20:56:19 i think that if you go vented that you take a chance of overpowering it, because as I have learned from being helped here on the forum that when going vented that it takes less power for the sub to reach x-max than it would if you went sealed. So with your sub being rated at 1000W PEAK and 750W RMS, if you place it in a vented enclosure it will take less than the 1000W to peak, so I would say go sealed, and I would definately say don't go buy another 12w7 just yet wait and see if the 12w7 you have now is going to be enough for you, after you've tested out what you have, if you want more go buy more but at least try out what you have first. uochronos on 04/17/2004 21:04:50 it has an rms of 750watts in a sealed box it well most likly take the 1000watts but it weould likly over power in a ported box. if you really want ported i would suggest getting a second one which would put you right about at rms... if you go sealed you should be fine with 1000watts rms might want to make the box slightly towaqrds the smaller end of the recomended sizes. and dont turn the bass boost or gain up too high or you also risk damage to the speaker. ttocs on 04/18/2004 10:18:25 what kind if amp? brand? swez on 04/18/2004 10:25:25 Try the single W7 in a sealed box. It will handle more power this way, give good low end bass and high SPL/SQ performance. That amp will give you plenty of dynamic headroom for high energy bass spikes and do it cleanly too. As for the size of the box, the spec range is: 1. Sealed Range: 1.25 - 1.625 cu. ft. (35.4 - 46.02 ltrs.) 2. Recommended Sealed Volume: 1.375 cu. ft. (38.94 ltrs.) I would go with the 1.375 cf as it is a blend of power handling and good low bass extension. This is your best SQL enclosure. If you want more power and less low bass, the 1.25 cf will do fine. If you want more deep lows and use less amp power, the 1.625 will give you the deep lows. Swez gobber on 04/18/2004 17:50:07 Ok, cool. thanks, i will just try out the one sub and see how much more i want. thanks Raefin on 04/19/2004 09:03:01 I actually have a 12w7 in a prowedge box along with the 1000/1 amp. The amp will not overpower the sub unless you really try and abuse the sub. I have been able to play sustained bass test tracks with it for extended periods and have had no problems with the sub. (This was done by the installer) The sound from the 1 speaker is enough to completely cover an entire suburban to the point where it can become uncomfortable listening to it. So in your civic I would assume it will be deafening. Proper installs are a must though. ttocs on 04/19/2004 11:53:43 take 2............"what kind if amp? brand? " I'm asking as a 1000 watt jl is not the same as a 1000 watt jensen.......... uochronos on 04/19/2004 11:59:20 he said in his first post it was a 1000/1 JL amp. gobber on 04/19/2004 22:47:29 I have the 1000/1 jl amp, i'm just waitting to install it. because i need a box, and i'm also waitting to see if i should just buy another one, the reason i'm waitting on a box is because a box cost money and i would have to spend it on a one 12 box, and then later have to buy a box for two 12s. Raefin, the box your talking about is black sealed box for just one 12, right? how much is that box? thanks again kiaman on 04/20/2004 01:01:41 it is box dependent if that is to much power or not, mechanacally it will do better in a sealed box, but thremaley it will handle more in a ported box. what size box? what type of box? (sealed or ported) if ported, whats the tuneing? whats your electrical system like? JL amps are VERY power hungry. Raefin on 04/20/2004 08:44:37 Not sure if they actually sell the boxes separately. But I believe I paid ~$850 for the box and sub together. The JL amps are definitely power hungry. Again I do not know your listening preferences or purpose with your purchase so I can only tell you that 1 12" JL is enough to make sitting in a suburban uncomfortable at high volumes. swez on 04/20/2004 15:39:39 I believe Sub Zone makes a very good enclosure for the 12W7 series... yes they do. Here is the link: http://www.thezeb.com/detail.aspx?ID=5369 $195.00 + S&H That's about $50.00 in materials, 4-6 hours labor. The rest is middleman profits. If you are handy with wood and have the proper tools, build it yourself on a weekend and save ~$150.00. http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/pdfs/12W7_MAN.pdf Page 4 has details on enclosure specs for both ported and sealed enclosures. If you are a novice builder, try sealed for now. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
