the 3 main types of amps are class d, class a/b and class t... class d's are 1 channel amps and have around 80-90% effciency poswer consumption wise and these amps are good for subs only pretty much. class a/b are 2 channel amps and have a 50-70% effieciency rating abour. these are good for sub or speaker applications. then there are class t amps they are digital and have very high efficiency ratings 80-90% these can be 1,2 or 4 channel amps making them very versitile for subs or speakers. and very cleam sounding. some other well probaly be able to help you out more/ but thats the bassics

There is a lot of detail that can be added to this subject... but for the average user, here's what you NEED TO KNOW...

1. Class A/B amps are best for full range music applications. They are clean sounding, manage power fair (~60% eff) and a good all around amp, even for subs

2. Class D is only for sub applications. They start to degrade in signal purity above 500 Hz. Very high efficiency ratngs. (90%+), can do 1 or 2 ohm loads without frying the outputs, depending on model and specs. These are always MONO (1 channel) amps.

3. Class T digital amps are similar to Class D designs, but have modified circuits to provide very good fidelity full range audio. Similar efficiency ratings as a Class D amp, but can do multiple channels as well.

These are the most common amps used in Car Audio.
